Regionalism is a major characteristic of geography.Regional cognitive ability is an important quality of thinking and ability for students to analyze and understand geographic processes and master geographic laws and the system of human-earth relations. As a comprehensive subject,GIS is a modern information technology with powerful functions and a useful tool for geography teaching, but there are few studies on the application of GIS in the development of regional cognitive ability of high school students in China.Based on the above background, the article takes the requirements of geography curriculum standard, the examination of regional cognitive ability in college entrance examination and the characteristics of geography subject as the basis, and uses the methods of literature analysis, summary and induction, case design and other methods to develop the application research of GIS in the cultivation of regional cognitive ability of high school students under the support of theories of multiple intelligences, information processing and constructivism. The specific content of the article research can be divided into the following parts. The first part is the research foundation. This part mainly introduces the basis of selecting this topic, the purpose and significance of the research, the review of domestic and foreign research, the research ideas and methods, and defines the relevant concepts and theoretical foundations,on which the research direction and content of the article are determined. The second part is the research content, which is the main body and core content of this study. The main content is to determine the relevant functions of GIS that can be applied to the cultivation of regional cognitive ability of high school students, including hot link function, data management function, data query function, spatial analysis function, making thematic maps function, and geomorphological expression function.Based on this analysis,it is concluded that using GIS as a tool to assist geography classroom teaching has the advantages of diversifying the presentation of teaching contents, enriching regional teaching resources, improving students’ regional analysis and synthesis ability, and cultivating students’ hands-on ability and spatial thinking. On the basis of conducting theoretical research, the article then conducts the analysis of the teaching application of GIS in the cultivation of regional cognitive ability of high school students--taking the teaching of regional element analysis as an example,GIS tools are used to analyze and present the main physical geographic elements and human geographic elements for teaching reference. Finally,we selected two sections of Chapter 2,Section 2,"The influence of air pressure and wind belt on climate" in the textbook of Compulsory 1 and Chapter2,Section 3,"Cities and urbanization" in the textbook of Compulsory 2.The case study includes the analysis of teaching materials, analysis of learning conditions, design of teaching objectives, design of teaching priorities, design of teaching process, providing reference and curriculum resources for front-line geography teachers, and completing the evaluation of the implementation effect of teaching case 1 "the influence of air pressure and wind bands on climate".The third part is the basic conclusions and shortcomings of the study.Firstly, the conclusions of this study are summarized: GIS,as an emerging geographic information technology,is an effective way to improve regional cognitive literacy by assisting secondary school geography teaching;GIS has multiple functions and advantages;GIS transforms traditional teaching and learning and helps to improve the effectiveness of geography teaching. Finally, the problems of this study are analyzed: the functions of GIS are not fully exploited;the design of teaching cases is not perfect and only one of the two cases designed in the article has been implemented;the evaluation method of classroom teaching effect is single, etc.
