The outbreak of the novel coronavirus pneumonia(COVID-19)has caused intense psychological pressure to the public, especially teenagers who lack the crisis defense capability. At the same time, young students are faced with the challenge of not starting classes. The sudden "learning epidemic" accompanied by the disease epidemic has brought tremendous changes to students' study and life.To curb the spread of the virus, students are isolated at home and learn online for a long time. The great changes in learning methods and learning environments have brought about a series of problems. The behaviors that students make in response to problems have become a focus of research. At the same time,it has become an important task to improve students' student engagement in the new environment.Based on previous studies,it is found that under the traditional teaching environment and daily life background, student engagement is greatly affected by students' adaptability and academic emotions. The broaden-and-build theory holds that positive academic emotions can promote students to be more persistent and diligent in study, negative academic emotions will harm students' learning, which will lead to the decrease of students' learning investment.According to the control-value theory, students who can adapt to novelty and uncertainty faster can regain a sense of control over study and life, and experience positive academic emotions after the change of environment.Conversely, students who feel unable to adapt may experience negative academic emotions. This study believes that students' adaptability is an important influencing factor influencing student engagement in the context of the epidemic, and adaptability may affect student engagement through academic emotions. Therefore, this study explores the influence of adaptability affecting student engagement and the role of academic emotions in the process of adaptability affecting student engagement through comprehensive cross-sectional research and longitudinal tracking research. In study one,a cross-sectional study method was adopted to explore the influence of students' adaptability on student engagement and the role of academic emotions in this process.Data were collected from 4,226 students nationwide through an online questionnaire in early March 2020.Adaptability Scale,Academic Emotion Questionnaire, and Student Engagement Questionnaire were used. The results show that adaptability can directly and positively affect student engagement(direct effect),and positive academic emotions and negative academic emotions respectively play a partial mediating role in this process(mediating effect).Based on the first study, the longitudinal tracking method was used to further study the duration of the influence of adaptability on student engagement, and the effect of academic emotion in this at two time points. Two online surveys were conducted in late March 2020(T1: Time 1)and late April 2020(T2: Time 2)by Adaptability Scale,Academic Sentiment Questionnaire, and Student Engagement Questionnaire.A total of 1,119 college students from all over the country participated in the surveys.Based on the results of study one, study two made further findings. On the one hand,T1 adaptability can directly and positively affect T2 student engagement(direct effect),on the other hand,T1 adaptability had a chain mediating effect on T2 student engagement by increasing positive academic emotions and decreasing negative academic emotions(chain mediating effect)The results show that the improvement of students' adaptability will enhance the level of positive academic emotions, and reduce the level of negative academic emotions, thereby increase the degree of student engagement. The results of this study suggest that we should pay attention to training students' adaptability to better adapt to environmental changes, especially facing and adapting to major emergencies such as the COVID-19 epidemic,to improve positive academic emotions and reduce the level of negative academic emotions during the learning process, and achieve the goal of full devotion to learning. The results of this study have enriched the domestic and international relevant researches on adaptability and student engagement under the background of major public emergencies.
