Abstract/Summary:
In the 19th National Congress report of the Party,Xi Jinping pointed out that youth prospering is national prosperity while youth is strong while state is strong.College students are the backbone of the youth group.Caring about the physical and mental health of college students is not only conducive to the healthy growth of the group, but also related to the future development of national construction. In recent years, college students’ depression and other mental health problems frequently lead to social concerns. As the disseminator of public health information, media reports play a positive role in the popularization and prevention of College Students’ depression.Based on Baldwin Van Gorp’s frame theory and frame packages analysis method, this paper analyzes the reports on College Students’ depression in China Youth Daily(2001-2020)from two aspects of frame device and reasoning device, integrating the consideration of cultural dimension, and explores the frame presentation and evolution of the reports on College Students’ depression in China Youth Daily. From 2001 to 2020,the number of reports on College Students’ depression in China Youth Daily is on the rise. The research summarizes five framework packages, which are " Problem Seriously" frame packages,"Risk and Consequence" framework package,"Questioning and Reflection" framework package,"Construction Approach" framework package and "Disease Popularization" framework package. In the reports over the years, the "Construction Approach" framework package, which is mainly oriented to the prevention and intervention of College Students’ depression, has long been dominant, the "Problem Seriously" and "Questioning and Reflection" framework packages as followed respectively;the overall number of "Risk Consequence" framework package, which highlight the severity of the consequences of College Students’ depression,is small and shows a downward trend. The obvious framework competition appeared in the reports in the past five years. The proportion of "Disease Popularization" frame package, which has long accounted for a relatively small proportion, has been greatly improved in recent years, and medical discourse has begun to receive more attention in the reports. The frame of China Youth Daily’s report on the depression of Chinese college students still shows different characteristics at different reporting stages.Through in-depth interviews and analysis of relevant journalists of China Youth Daily,it is found that the changes of the reporting framework are closely related to the changes of social development, such as the changes of the main social contradictions in China and the popularization of higher education in China;closely related to the political positioning of media institutions and news concepts;and the diachronic characteristics of the reporting framework are influenced by the personal cognition, working environment and life contact of journalists now it also has a certain impact. In addition, this paper also carries out small-scale semi-structured in-depth interviews with college students who are troubled by depression and college students who are not troubled, summarizes the problems in the reports of China Youth Daily in the past 20 years, and finally puts forward four optimization suggestions for mainstream media such as China Youth Daily: Strengthen the discussion of disease science, and strive to construct a diversified puzzle of depression issues. The attribution of reporting responsibility should be more rigorous and prudent, and actively cultivate the soil of cultural environment to get rid of the stigma;close to the characters, convey the warmth of the stratosphere, and impact the hearts of the public with real strength;unite all parties to break through the communication limitations, and the mainstream media should organically echo and jointly promote the voice of public opinion.
