While the rapid development of agriculture in china,it has brought about serious ecological destruction and environmental pollution.Under the dual constraints of resources and environment, more attention should be paid to the green development of agriculture.Green total factor productivity(GTFP)should take both production efficiency and ecological protection into consideration.Improving agricultural GTFP is an important way to promote the green development of agriculture.Maize as an important food crop in China, the ecological and environmental problem in the process of agricultural development also exist widely in maize cultivation. This article clarifies the concept of maize GTFP,analyzes relevant literature and theories, and measures the GTFP and its growth of each major maizeproducing province through the SBM-ML model, thereby analyzing the temporal characteristics and regional differences of maize GTFP in China. The kernel density estimation curve is used to depict the evolution trend of maize GTFP in each province and region. Finally, the panel Tobit model and threshold regression model are used to explore the influencing factors and mechanisms of maize GTFP in each region. The main conclusions are:(1)The overall maize GTFP in China has not yet reached an effective level, and the growth fluctuates greatly between years. The growth of maize GTFP depends on the alternating driving effect of technical efficiency and technical progress, and the promotion effect of technical progress on maize GTFP is partly inhibited by the inefficient utilization of resource elements.(2)There are obvious regional differences in maize GTFP in China. The GTFP in the southwestern mountainous area has generally reached an effective level, and the growth of technical efficiency and technical progress is significant but fluctuates greatly in each period.Although the level in the northwestern irrigation area is the lowest, but the technical progress and technical efficiency have both rapidly improved in recent years, and Xinjiang has a significant production advantage. The maize GTFP in the HuangHuai-Hai summer sowing area and the northern spring sowing area has maintained stable growth, but the space for improvement is relatively small.Chinese maize production is gradually concentrated in the advantageous areas, but it is still far from forming a steady state. The redundancy of resource and energy input and the excessive undesired output are the root causes of the inefficiency of maize GTFP,the differences in input and output redundancy are large among different regions.(3)Agricultural fiscal investment, environmental pollution control, and agricultural technological expenditure are the driving factors for improving maize GTFP.The crop disaster rate is the limiting factor, and there are differences in the mechanism of the effects of maize planting structure, urbanization level, and agricultural industrial agglomeration on maize GTFP in different regions.(4)Agricultural mechanization has a single threshold effect on maize GTFP in the northwestern irrigation area and a double threshold effect on the other three regions. Its degree and direction of influence are affected by regional heterogeneity. Finally, this article proposes relevant strategies to address the problems of green maize production in China.
