Cultural creativity is an important element in furniture design, and furniture types that express cultural creativity in furniture as a focus of design can be referred to as literary furniture.Rhetoric is the study of how rhetoric can be adapted to lead to better expression.Rhetoric in a broad sense can be introduced into the field of product design as a design method, and the creative application of this design method to design is a common feature of many great pieces of furniture. In today’s furniture design, there is no shortage of cases where rhetoric is not used thoroughly and clearly, where the rhetorical principle of honestly expressing the original intention is not achieved, leading to problems of falsity, pretension and semantic confusion, and where the object of rhetoric is overly concerned with the expression of visual images, ignoring the linguistic characteristics of the physical object. The reason for this is that an effective set of rhetorical methods applicable to furniture design has not yet been established.Through a summary of existing examples of excellent design,as well as an analysis of linguistic rhetoric theory, the study is conducted using the analogical method to identify the connotations, characteristics and categories of cultural and creative furniture. In the transition from linguistic rhetoric to furniture product rhetoric, the theoretical model of Peirce’s logic-rhetorical semiotics is borrowed as a bridge, and the exploration of rhetorical purpose is used as a combination point for the construction of rhetorical methods. The rhetorical expression patterns of the furniture case are analysed, the five components of the rhetorical structure are summarised, the four pairs of rhetorical patterns applicable in the design of furniture are summarised, and the transformation of the eight rhetorical patterns into the design of furniture is carried out on three levels:retrospective transformation, structural analysis and usable situations, and illustrated by means of diagrams. On the basis of the analysis,a set of basic rhetorical processes is established for the design of cultural and creative furniture products in three stages and seven steps:rhetorical preparation, rhetorical construction and rhetorical evaluation. The rhetorical method proposed in the study takes models, means and processes as the anchor, providing a referenceable strategy in the stylistic expression stage of cultural and creative furniture, and offering a new solution path for the formal expression of cultural and creative concepts in furniture design. At the same time,it provides a reference for future research on the rhetoric of furniture design and product design.
