Francesco Borromini

As an innovative architect of seventeenth century,Borromini broke through the limitations of traditional rules on the basis of the revival of the extensive architectural heritage of the Renaissance.He chose to unbiasedly absorb the superior traditions of different trends and innovates.Taking the structural advantages of Gothic architecture,learning from the space mode of the humanist period,Borromini use geometric figures as tools to control and complete the exquisite architectural creation.The research concentrates on the background,social factors,artistic environment,and architectural activities that accompanied the growth of Borromini,thus presenting a comprehensive background framework that affects the architect’s artistic design.On this basis,a detailed analysis of the architect’s personal works is carried out.Concept,geometric order,and symbolic signs displayed in the two representative works of S.Carlo and S.Ivo are well interpreted.Together with design techniques analysis in other small renovation projects,we can roughly sum up Borromini’s personal style.The analysis,on the one hand,traces Borromini’s techniques beyond the times back to predecessors’ creations,and on the other hand,sort out the common characters of artistic creation,on the basis of understanding the architect’s life and main works,which are breaking through the plane,unity of structure and space decoration,and the geometric logic.Got sufficient understanding of tradition,Borromini strove to innovate in spatial patterns.Using geometric figure which considering structure need in creation is an important experience of modern design programme.And he has enlightened modernity in the creation of formal vocabulary.The research attempts to establish the connection between Borromini’s creative techniques and the contemporary.And while strengthening the understanding of classical architecture creation,it also studies the heuristic principles for contemporary architecture.
