In recent years, with the progress of urban development, people’s demand for urban construction is no longer only satisfied with the evaluation of environmental merits, but vitality has begun to become one of the criteria for measuring the quality of urban space, especially for those waterfront areas with good location and social value in the city, the significance of vitality evaluation is particularly important. The Yitong River waterfront acts as a ’living room’ for the city’s citizens, who gather there from all directions, thus bringing vitality to the waterfront space. However, the study of the Yitong River waterfront space has revealed that there is a lack of basic research on vitality, especially quantitative research on vitality, insufficient systematic research and basic data preparation, and a lack of explanation of the intrinsic causes of vitality.Based on this background, this study analyses the factors influencing the vitality of urban waterfront spaces and the underlying causes from the perspective of exploring the vitality of waterfront spaces,in order to provide data to support the enhancement of the vitality of the Itong River waterfront space. This paper firstly summarises the results of a large amount of previous literature to establish a vitality evaluation model suitable for the characteristics of the Itong River, and determines two dimensions of indicators in the model. The second is the selection of 10 representative environmental elements from four major indicators, namely location, traffic, facilities and spatial characteristics,as indicators that may affect the vitality of the waterfront space.Secondly, the spatial and temporal variation of the vitality of each waterfront space unit and the environmental element indicators were quantified and visualised using the multi-source data obtained for the urban section of the Yitong River in Changchun. The main findings are that the overall vitality of waterfront spaces is higher on rest days than on weekdays and rest days. The waterfront spaces were then divided into four types of vitality according to the different vitality characteristics in each plot, which were the four different vitality types of waterfront spaces,so as to continue to explore the internal characteristics and distribution patterns of these four vitality types of waterfront spaces. The correlation and multiple regression analyses were carried out using the correlation analysis tool SPSS mathematical statistics software to quantify the correlation between the vitality intensity and stability of the waterfront space and the environmental elements of the Yitong River waterfront space, and to observe the degree of correlation between various environmental indicators and vitality. The environmental factors of facility richness, attraction richness, shoreline liveliness and residential development do not have a significant effect on the generation and reduction of vitality. Therefore,it is proposed that the vitality enhancement strategy can be improved by enriching the traffic network, increasing the density of infrastructure distribution in the waterfront space, planning the diversity of land use functions and improving the quality of green space. The study not only complements the methodology and data of waterfront vitality research at the theoretical level, but also proposes relevant vitality enhancement strategies based on the Yitong River waterfront space at the practical level, which will add to the ecological and humanistic construction of the urban waterfront space in the future.
