A Study On The Folk Conservation And Use Model Of The Architectural Heritage Of Residential Buildings

The exploration by folk groups of models for the conservation and use of residential architectural heritage is of great significance,especially in providing new methods of conservation for the large number of vernacular residential buildings,as well as inspiring and innovative ways of adaptive use.As a famous historical and cultural town in China,Shuangxi has a large area of residential buildings in addition to many public buildings.The "worker and material method" conservation restoration model implemented by "THINKER" at Zhangzhai and the community-oriented use model implemented at Xuefu are exemplary for the future conservation and use of residential buildings in Shuangxi.On the basis of determining the background and significance of the chosen topic,this paper summarises the relevant literature on the town of Shuangxi and folk conservation and use,and defines the concepts of residential architectural heritage and folk conservation and use models.Firstly,the historical lineage of Shuangxi and the unique geographical pattern of three mountains surrounded by two streams are introduced.Shuangxi has preserved a complete pattern of traditional streets and lanes as well as residential and clan patterns,and Xuefu and Zhangzhai,as representative residential architectural heritage of Shuangxi,are the main objects of this paper because of their historical and cultural integrity,certain value and typical architectural style.Secondly,with the case of the Zhangzhai,the "worker and material method" model of folk conservation restoration is introduced.The work method,with labour and materials at its core,follows the four principles of efficiency,respect for prototypes,moderate improvement and site,and has the advantages of saving materials,saving money,preserving traditions and passing on skills,etc.The "worker and material method" model in the restoration of the Zhangzhai follows certain principles of authenticity and integrity,but also affects the effectiveness of conservation because of labour,mechanisms and management issues.Lastly,we introduced the "THINKER",a civil society organisation leading the adaptive use of Xuefu,whose philosophy of public welfare and community creation has set the direction for the adaptive use of Xuefu.With the support of the "Three Introduction and Three Creation" policy,"THINKER" has started the community-oriented adaptive use of Xuefu in the form of "low rent and long lease",making full use of the space resources of Xuefu to create a community public space;innovating the content of the adaptive use,carrying out public welfare education,community activities and exhibition activities,forming a community and public welfare-oriented adaptive use model.The utilisation model of Xuefu provides inspiration and experience for the future direction of the utilisation of Zhangzhai.At the same time,based on the content of the interviews,the possibilities and difficulties of the three directions of the utilisation of Zhangzhai,namely community-oriented,cultural and commercial,and heritage conservation,are summarised and analysed,and folk opinions are put forward for the utilisation of Zhangzhai.
