ObjectiveThyroid nodules(TN)are abnormal growths of normal thyroid tissue cells and are most commonly seen in women with anxiety disorders and in the elderly.The nodules are classified as benign or malignant according to their histopathology and disease behaviour.The main clinical management of benign thyroid nodules is through follow-up,western medicine and Chinese herbal medicine,of which Chinese herbal medicine is increasingly accepted by patients for its effectiveness and low side effects.Several studies have shown that Pingxiao Capsules have the effect of eliminating galls and removing tumours,effectively reducing the production of thyroid nodules,and its effect is related to increasing apoptosis of thyroid nodule cells.Interleukin-1β(IL-1β)is an active cytokine that regulates cellular immunity and metabolism,and can regulate cell proliferation and apoptosis through various pathways.The clinical efficacy of Pingxiao capsule in the treatment of benign thyroid nodules and whether its effect is related to IL-1β were investigated.Methods100 patients with benign thyroid nodules by fine-needle aspiration cytology in the First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University were selected for the study and randomly divided into an observation group and a treatment group of 50 cases each,while 50 healthy individuals with normal thyroid ultrasound were recruited as the control group.The treatment group was treated with Pingxiao capsules for 6 months.All three groups consumed non-iodized salt and avoided iodine-rich foods such as seafood during the follow-up period.The iodine-rich food was not consumed during the follow-up period.The 3,5,3’-triiodothyronine(T3)、 3,5,3’,5’-triiodothyronine(T4),thyroid stimulating hormone(TSH)、Anti-thyroglobulin(ATG)、Anti-thyroperoxidase(ATPO)were measured by chemical spectroscopy.The serum levels of IL-1 β were measured by radioimmunoassay.The size of nodules and thyroid-related hormone levels in the observation group were compared with those in the treatment group before and after follow-up;serum IL-1 β levels in the control and treatment groups were compared before and after treatment.Results(1)Before and after follow-up,there was no statistical difference in the size of nodule diameter in the observation group compared with before,and the nodule diameter in the treatment group decreased compared with before,and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05);(2)The effective rate of nodule reduction in observation group was 12%,and the effective rate of the treatment group was 70%,which was higher than that of the observation group,and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05);(3)Before and after follow-up,the serum T3,T4,TSH,and ATG and ATPO levels were not statistically different from before(P>0.05);(4)The IL-1β levels of patients in the treatment group were higher than those in the control group(P<0.05),and the IL-1β levels in the treatment group were higher than before,with statistically significant differences(P<0.05);After treatment,IL-1 β level in the treatment group was higher than that in the control group,and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).ConclusionPingxiao Capsules can reduce the diameter of benign thyroid nodules;There was no statistical difference in the effect of Pingxiao Capsule on thyroid function and related antibodies in patients with benign thyroid nodules;Disturbance of serum IL-1β levels in patients with thyroid nodules;the anti-nodular effect of Pingxiao Capsules may be related to the regulation of IL-1βlevels.
