Effect Of Statin Therapy On Cognitive Function And Possible Influencing Factors In Patients With Acute Coronary Syndrome

Abstract/Summary:
Background and objective:In addition to their efficacy in improving dyslipidemia,statins have a variety of anti-inflammatory,antithrombotic and antioxidant effects and are widely used for primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular events..However,case reports from clinical work and some observational studies have identified potential central nervous system side effects of statins,such as cognitive dysfunction.In contrast,case-control and randomized controlled studies did not find such an association,and there are conflicting studies on the effects of statins on patients’ cognitive function.To address the uncertainties of previous studies,the aim of this study was to use a prospective study with an intraindividual design to look at changes in cognitive function in patients with acute coronary syndrome(ACS)treated with statins.Methods: This trial is a prospective,single-center,pre-and post-control study.The data of 300 patients with acute coronary syndrome who were hospitalized in the Department of Cardiology of the First Hospital of Lanzhou University from September 1,2020 to December 31,2020 and were treated with statins were continuously selected,all from different regions,counties(cities)in Gansu Province.Within 48 hours after admission,the patients were evaluated with the mini-mental state examination scale(MMSE)or montreal cognitive assessment scale(Mo CA)for cognitive ability,and the patients were collected with medical history and laboratory indicators.The patients included in the survey were followed up for 1,3,6,9,12 months after taking statin,and were assessed with cognitive scale and collected with medical history.We used a within-individual design and a paired-samples t-test to assess changes in patient cognitive function during statin treatment within each individual.Results: 1.There was no difference in the cognitive function scores of male and female respondents at 1 month,3 months,6 months,9 months and 12 months after discharge(P>0.05).2.The cognitive function scores of patients with diabetes and patients without diabetes at 1 month,3 months,6 months,9 months and 12 months after discharge were not significantly different(P>0.05).3.Cognitive function scores at 1 month,3 months,6 months,9 months,and 12 months differed between patients with different levels of education and were statistically significant(P < 0.05).4.The cognitive function scores of statin treatment for 1 month,3 months,6 months,9months and 12 months were significantly higher than the baseline(P<0.05)and the difference between the cognitive function score of patients at each follow-up node and the cognitive function score of baseline status was positive,and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).Conclusions: 1.The use of statins in patients with acute coronary syndrome had no significant adverse effects on patients’ cognitive function.2.Different levels of education may affect patients’ cognitive function.3.Gender grouping,whether diabetes is combined,statin category,other plasma indicators(blood sodium,blood uric acid,homocysteine),and different BMI groups have no significant difference in the cognitive function of patients.
