In recent years, the state has introduced a series of policies to advocate the importance of life education and frustration education of primary and middle school students,in order to cultivate students to love their life. The introduction of these policies reflects the importance of society to the suicide problem of primary and middle school students.Surveys show that about 30 percent of teenagers have ever suicide ideation, and the rate is higher among junior school students. Therefore,it is particularly important to investigate junior school students’ suicide ideation, explore the mechanism of it and further improve their mental health level.Among the factors affecting suicide ideation, violence is widely discussed by lots of researchers. But previous studies have started from a single dimension of violence, therefore, this study explores the impact of exposure to violence, which is the overall of violence,on suicide ideation, and add self-concept to explore the relationship among these three variables based on The Interpersonal Theory of Suicide. On this basis,in order to understand the dynamic development of the mental health status of junior school students, this study collected their exposure to violence and suicide ideation at two time points to observe their development level.Furthermore, this study compared the relationship between exposure to violence,self-concept and suicide ideation to help us know more comprehensive and dynamic understanding of these relationship. This study selected a middle school in Jiang Jin district of Chongqing as the research object, used the questionnaire survey to conduct research. The questionnaire were recovered at September 2020 and October 2021 respectively. The Middle-School Students’ Violence Exposure Scale, the Song&Hattie Self-Concept Scale and the Suicide Probability Scale were used to measure the level of exposure to violence,self-concept and suicide ideation of subjects. This study used SPSS26.0 to analysis data.In Study1,we researched the level of subjects’ exposure to violence,self-concept and suicide ideation through descriptive statistics and difference examination, further researched the differences of exposure to violence and suicide ideation in different demographic variables.Meanwhile,we also researched the development characteristics of different exposure to violence level students’ suicide ideation. In Study 2,we researched the correlation of exposure to violence,self-concept and suicide ideation and the mediating mechanism of self-concept between exposure to violence and suicide ideation.Based on Study 1 and 2,in Study 3,we compared the level of exposure to violence and suicide ideation in the past two years, also compared the change of the mediating mechanism of self-concept to verify the establishment condition of this mediation model. Those results are as follows:(1)The rate of junior school students’ exposure to violence and suicide ideation are at a high level, the status of exposure to violence and suicide ideation is common but not serious among junior students.(2)There are significant gender and region difference in exposure to violence, and there is only gender difference in suicide ideation.(3)The level of suicide ideation of high exposure to violence group is significantly higher than the low exposure to violence group.(5)Exposure to violence can significantly positively predict suicide ideation, significantly negatively predict self-concept.And self-concept can significantly negatively predict suicide ideation.Self-concept plays a partial mediating role between exposure to violence and suicide ideation.(6)The level of junior school students’ exposure to violence and suicide ideation is on the rise.(7)As the score of exposure to violence increases, the high exposure to violence group has a more direct impact on suicide ideation, and self-concept no longer plays a mediating role in it;in addition to directly influencing suicide ideation, the low exposure to violence group can still have an impact on suicide ideation through self-concept.This study revealed the development of junior school students’ exposure to violence and suicidal ideation in the last two years, and examined the relationship between exposure to violence,self-concept and suicidal ideation and their dynamic changes, which is conducive to understanding the mental health level of junior school students, and provides suggestions for the development of mental health education.
