A Study On Cgtn English News Based On A Multimodal Corpus Of Traditional Chinese CGTN English News Of Traditional Chinese Medicine With The Background Of COVID-19

The practice of TCM in fighting with COVID-19 provides a good opportunity for TCM culture to be known more by the world,and the TCM news on CGTN(China Global Television Network)can reflect the international communication image of TCM to a certain extent.Due to the diversity of media formats,multimodal news discourse research has become a new trend in the field of multimodal research.In this study,the TCM English news tweeted by CGTN’s official Facebook(current name: Meta)from December 2019 to December 2022 was selected for this study,with a total duration of 17 h,32m,and 28 s and about 200,000 words of news text,including nearly 100,000 words of video transcription texts,100,000 words of written news texts,and 28 news pictures.All these were classified into eight categories: TCM antiepidemic,TCM efficacy,TCM propaganda,TCM domestic development,TCM international communication,TCM poverty alleviation,and TCM policy,and a multimodal corpus of CGTN TCM English news in the background of COVID-19 has been constructed.With the tool of multimodal annotation software ELAN6.3 and the facial expression analytical toolkit Open Face,linguistic features(e.g.high-frequency lexical chunks,verbs,nouns,etc),paralinguistic features(e.g.pitch,intonation,repetition,etc),and non-linguistic features(e.g.expressions,gestures,etc.)were annotated and analyzed based on Zhang Delu’s multimodal discourse analytical framework.Meanwhile,this study also provides an in-depth discussion on the sentiment of Facebook comments on TCM news through Sentiment Analysis API with Baidu.The multimodal features of CGTN TCM English news are discussed in terms of “what are the features” – “what do they express” – “how do they express” – “what kind of information is reflected” – “how about the effect”.This study explores its communication in overseas social media: Facebook,with the following three main issues addressed:(1)What linguistic features(e.g.high-frequency lexical chunks,verbs,nouns,etc),paralinguistic features(e.g.pitch,intonation,repetition,etc),and nonlinguistic features(e.g.expressions,gestures,etc.)are presented in the TCM English news reports tweeted by CGTN(China Global Television Network)through Facebook(current name: Meta)social media?After analyzing the lexical features,grammatical features,and structural features of the texts,it was found that the common linguistic features in the CGTN TCM English news mainly include: the frequent use of lexical chunks and positive words,present tense,direct quotations,and indirect quotations.The paralinguistic features of TCM English news reports are mainly shown in the pictures of tweets with bold words,speakers’ intonation,speed of speech and the ways of speaking.The nonlinguistic features are reflected in the head movements,gestures,images,and music.(2)Are there some typical multimodal features in the CGTN TCM English news?What kinds of functions are made by the multimodal features ?The most frequent linguistic features in the CGTN TCM English news are the frequent use of lexical chunks and positive words,serving as the interpersonal,referential and organizing functions.The most frequent paralinguistic feature in the CGTN TCM English news are the pause feature and the rising tone feature,serving as the interpersonal functions.In terms of non-linguistic features,facial action units accounted for the largest number,and the tension conveyed by facial expressions of fear was dominant.The head movement has the highest annotation length.The hand gesture feature has the highest annotation length and the animation has the highest annotation length.The non-linguistic features serve as the interpersonal and referential functions.In conclusion,all these features have played an important role in TCM cultural communication.(3)With these multimodal features,what kind of effect has CGTN TCM English news made in the international arena? What insights have been gained from the foreign comments on TCM?This study used Python codes to access the Baidu sentiment analysis API port to analyze and classify news comments with the ternary sentiment.We found that the overall attitude of overseas groups towards CGTN TCM English news is positive.Among them,most of the comments belonged to TCM anti-epidemic news,and positive comments accounted for 88.70%,negative comments were 0.7%,and another10% were neutral comments.The overall evaluation shows that CGTN TCM English news has created a good international image with multimodal features,and has achieved a good reputation among overseas groups.The innovation and significance of this paper are mainly reflected in the following three aspects.(1)Innovation in the academic aspect.By constructing a multimodal corpus of CGTN TCM English new reports,this study analyzes its communication effect based on their linguistic,paralinguistic,and non-linguistic characteristics.CGTN shows its positive roles in the process of TCM cultural communication,which provides a new perspective for the study of TCM overseas communication.(2)Innovation in the research methods.In this paper,we adopt Python code to access the Baidu Natural Language-Sentiment Analysis API port to conduct sentiment-attitude analysis on Facebook(current name: Meta)audience comments,which provides a new perspective and method for the study of TCM overseas communication.(3)Innovation in empirical practice.This study applies the Open Face toolkit,an experimental quantitative analysis software of psychology,to the analysis of multimodal feature,which plays a complementary role in the field of empirical research on the multimodal corpus of news discourse.
