With the improvement of the political environment and the continuous improvement of female status after the founding of the people’s Republic of China, female art has emerged in contemporary painting as a "new generation" force since the 1990s.The exhibition titled with "World of Female Painters" held by eight female college students of Central Academy of Fine Art in 1990 marks the rise of female art.Female artists have broken through the previous single mode of emotional expression, started to find themselves and explore the personalized painting language from their own female perspective. The biggest contemporary feature of contemporary female art is the awakening of female self-consciousness,which has changed from "germination" in the 1980s to "selfconsciousness" in the 1990s,breaking the long-standing rigid male aesthetic.Female artists have gradually constructed a framework of female art in a way different from male thinking. They are not only born sensitive, delicate and soft, but also formed the characters of being strong, confident and sober in the process of growing up.They pay more attention on the theme of eternity rather than confined to historical and social themes, for example, the reproduction of life in Yan Ping’s paintings, the survival experience of women in the long history in Liu Manwen’s paintings, and the image transformation of women in different social contexts in Liu Hong’s paintings. They express the unique spiritual charm of women in their works with perceptual mode of thinking and rational creative thinking. This paper is composed of three parts. The 1st part is the Introduction, which summarizes the research background, previous research results, the purpose and significance of the research, research methods and innovation of the research on the self-awareness of contemporary female artists in China. The 2nd part is divided into four sections. The 1st section describes the background and development of female art in China, and summarizes the reasons why female art is called "Lost History".The 2nd section elaborates the origin of expressive oil painting in the history of Chinese contemporary art,and explore the internal clues of "expressiveness" in traditional Chinese painting. At the same time,it deeply analyzes the inevitable connection between expressive oil painting and female art in the way of expression. The 3rd section is the key content of this paper. It specifically elaborates the self-awareness embodiment of female artists in contemporary Chinese expressive oil paintings, takes Yan Ping,Liu Manwen, and Liu Hong as the representative painters to explore the process of manifesting its self-awareness through analyzing their growth experience and the transformation of works. The 4th section specifically expounds the recognition and prospect of Chinese contemporary female art, analyzes the limitations and future expectations of contemporary female art.At the same time,it also tries to summarize the commonalities in the transformation of contemporary female artists’ selfconsciousness. The third part is the conclusion.
