Xiao Hei,formerly known as Chen Qijie,is mainly engaged in fiction and prose creation.Since the publication of his collection Black in 1979,he has published many anthologies and won numerous awards. He is an outstanding Malaysian writer in Chinese.Xiao Hei is a Malaysian Chinese who has strong feelings for both Malaysia and the Chinese community. In the late 1980s,drastic changes took place in the society of Malaysia, and ethnic relations intensified, giving birth to many problems in politics, economy, education, culture and other aspects.Xiao Hei’s writing direction has also changed from the exploration and experiment of modernism and the exploration and portrayal of human nature to the writing of the Malaysian Chinese ethnic group. At that time, the government strengthened speech control and publication review, and the voice of writers was restricted.Xiao Hei boldly broke through the sensitive line of defense, using subtle words to show the difficult living conditions of the MCA ethnic group. At the same time,Xiao Hei has a high and conscious pursuit of literary techniques, which not only avoids the strict censorship system, but also makes the works have a unique artistic effect. This paper will make an in-depth analysis of Xiao Hei’s writings on Malaysian Chinese ethnic groups, trying to dig out the profound thinking of Xiao Hei’s works on ethnic issues,so as to see the unique value of his works. The body of this paper is divided into four chapters. The first chapter probes into the background of Malaysian-Chinese writing in Xiao Hei’s fictions. The author first explores the causes and current situation of the complex ethnic relations in Malaysia from a historical perspective.Secondly from the two literary traditions of Malaysia Chinese literary realism and modernism as well as the author’s personal experience to show his writing background. The second chapter focuses on the theme of the writing of ethnic groups in Xiao Hei’s fictions. From the perspectives of politics, culture, history and identity,it analyzes the profound social content of the writing of ethnic groups in little black fictions,as well as the unremitting struggle and profound reflection on the plight of ethnic groups behind it.The third chapter analyzes the images of the Malaysian Chinese in Xiao Hei’s fictions by means of individual analysis, classification analysis and comparative analysis. It mainly shows the images of four types of people, namely,Two generations of strivers, old and new, willing to fight for the rights of the Chinese people, those who pursue profits without principles, and the victims at the bottom of the society. The fourth chapter discusses the artistic skills of ethnic group writing in Xiao Hei’s fictions.Through close reading of the text and case enumeration,it shows how Xiao Hei skillfully uses various modernist techniques, such as defamiliarization, metaphor, symbol, fable, collage, etc.,and combines them with the realistic content presented by ethnic group writing, showing unique artistic effects.
