This study attempts to clarify the "symbolic debt" proposed by Jacque Lacan, explore how the unconscious mental structure of an individual is connected to generations and society, and reveals the structural homology between clinical practice and doctrine through the analyzing a case.Sigmund Freud once explained how the unconscious is collectively binding through his "myth of primal father",but this attempt ended in failure.Lacan proposed the symbolic debt to make a roundabout interpretation of Freud’s unfinished business. He placed the unconscious intergenerational nature in the issue of Symbolic register for investigation. However, after Lacan, academic circles in China and abroad have seldom discussed symbolic debt, and the definition of its connotation is even more ambiguous. In short, the current academic research on symbolic debt is not clear.Based on this fact, this study first focuses on elucidating the nature of symbolic debt along the path that Lacan opened. In Lacan’s seminar career, although he explored the relationship between symbolic debt and imaginary debt in the mental structure,he did not clarify the nature of symbolic debt. Therefore, the primary issue of the study is to clarify the genetics of symbolic debt and to explore the relationship between symbolic debt and imaginary debt from a diachronic perspective.Subsequently, through the elaboration of the effect of the debt problem, the study explores the isomorphism between Lacan’s "individual myth" and Freud’s "myth of primal father" from the perspective of unconscious intergenerational structure. On this basis, the study also explains the effectiveness of symbolic debt in the social structure, and conceptually explores Marx’s “surplus value” and Lacan’s “surplus jouissance” in an attempt to clarify the capitalist production’s psychological nature. Finally, returning to the clinical practice of psychoanalysis, the study discusses the utility of debt problems in psychoanalysis from the perspective of clinical structure, and provides certain possibilities for the clinical direction. After clarifying and discussing symbolic debt at the theoretical level, the study demonstrates a case and analyzes it from the perspective of symbolic debt.Based on the analysis and discussion of the various social relations in the discourse of the case, the mode of its connection with the outside world has gradually become clear, and the mode of symbolic debt operation has also been extracted.Through the above discussion, the effect of symbolic debt in constructing the relationship between the subject and others has been presented and clarified. It can be said that the symbolic debt makes the subject registered in the Symbolic register, thus forming the intergenerational and social relationship, and this relationship model can be presented in the psychoanalytic consultings. The symbolic debt constitutes a "debt" to the Symbolic register at the individual level, which makes the subject obey to the Symbolic register indicated by the Other.
