Philology is a traditional Chinese subject. It takes character or written language as the research object, and stresses textual research of documents and ancient old adages. This traditional subject involves philology, exegesis, phonology and classical philology, and is closely related to the Theory of Confucian Classics. This dissertation proposes that those who have made achievements in the research and inheritance of Xiaoxue(including philology, phonology, exegesis),Classical Chinese Bibliography and the Confucian classics should be regarded as philologists, including those who have made great contributions to the education of philology.Sui,Tang and Five Dynasties is an important period of social and cultural prosperity in Chinese history.Although the Sui Dynasty was short-lived,it achieved political unity and laid the foundation for the cultural prosperity of the Tang Dynasty. The long-term stable politics and the gradually prosperous economy of the Tang Dynasty ensured the development of culture, making the Tang Dynasty another peak in the history of Chinese culture.During this time,Philology got well developed. After the fall of the Tang Dynasty,China entered the period of Five Dynasties, and the society fell into turmoil. However, there were still a number of scholars devoted to inheriting and developing Philology. As one of the birthplaces of Chinese culture,a group of outstanding philologists emerged in Shandong, which made important contributions to the development of Philology in this period.Influenced by the institution of Imperial Examinations,Shandong philologists in this time actively studied Confucian culture, and consciously participated in cultural construction activities such as language standardization, collation of books and classics and compilation of the Chinese Ancient Encyclopedia. They have achieved fruitful academic achievements in the fields of philology, phonology, exegesis and classical philology, promoting the development of Philology in the Sui,Tang and Five Dynasties.During this period, new developments in Philology, such as the maturity of philology, the emergence of new rhyme books and integrated exegesis works, were all inseparable from the efforts of Shandong philologists, which laid the foundation for the prosperity of Philology in the Song Dynasty. From the perspective of regional academic history, the existing studies have not carried out comprehensive research on Shandong philology and Shandong philologists during Sui,Tang and Five Dynasties.Based on this, this dissertation takes Sui,Tang and Five Dynasties as the time division, combined with the five historical books of the Book of Sui(《隋书》),the New Book of Tang(《新唐书》),the Old Book of Tang(《旧唐书》),the New History of Five Dynasties(《新五代史》)and the Old History of Five Dynasties(《旧五代史》)as the literature basis,to exhaustively organize the Shandong philologists who appeared in the history books, trying to comprehensively analyze their academic activities and academic achievements and make a comprehensive summary of their contributions, which can provide a more sufficient historical basis for the study of ancient Shandong philologists and the history of philology. The thesis consists of seven parts.Part Ⅰ:Introduction. This part discusses the feasibility and necessity of this topic from five aspects:research object, research status, research methods, research significance and innovation.Part Ⅱ,Ⅲ and Ⅳ:Comprehensively sorting out the academic activities and achievements of Shandong philologists in history books.According to the order of Sui Dynasty,Tang Dynasty and Five Dynasties,This part, which is divided into three chapters, collects the Shandong native philologists(199)and the philologists(92)of non-Shandong origin but living in Shandong.Part Ⅴ:Sorting out and summarizing the important academic activities and achievements of Shandong philologists in Sui,Tang and Five Dynasties.During this period,Shandong philologists made great achievements in philology, phonology, exegesis, document collection and sorting, academic inheritance and the education of philology, promoting the development of philology and linguistics. In terms of academic inheritance, family education is still the main way for Shandong philologists to carry out the education of philology. There were six representative Shandong families, such as Yan Family of Langye,Cui Family of Qinghe,Wang Family of Langye,Xiao Family of Lanling,Xu Family of the Donghai and Duan Family of Linzi.Part Ⅵ:Summarizing the academic contributions of Shandong philologists have made in philology, phonology, exegesis,Classical Chinese Bibliography and education of philology during Sui,Tang and Five Dynasties.Part Ⅶ:Concluding remarks.Summarizing the whole text and points out the shortcomings of this thesis’s research.
