In this report, the author chooses the excerpts of Architecture Inside+Out: 50 Iconic Buildings In Detail as the source text for translation.Guided by the Hermeneutic Motion, four steps of translation “trust, aggression, incorporation and compensation”,keeping in mind the features of popular science texts: science, literariness, popularity, and interest, taking the case as an example, the author aims to explore how Hermeneutic Motion can be used in translation of popular science texts of architecture,so that the target text conforms to the features of popular science texts, and the target readers can feel better when reading the target text.As shown in translation of the source text,Hermeneutic Motion provides a methodology for translation of popular science texts of architecture, and plays a guiding role in the understanding and expression stages of translation.First,in the stage of understanding, the author,as the translator,“trusts” the source text a lot.Because the source text is a popular science text about architecture, the author believes that the text is true. The source text mainly introduces the distinctive features of several world-famous buildings and related events in history,so the author thinks that for Chinese readers,it is a text worth reading. The author then “invades” the source text, uses her knowledge of two languages and cultures, and searches for related information,so that the content in the source text can be precisely expressed in the target text.Second,in the stage of expression, the author “incorporates” the meaning into the target text.Given that popular science text should be fluent, popular and easy to understand, the author should grasp the meaning and logic of the source text, and change the expression when necessary in order to make the target text fluent and conform to the Chinese expression. In addition,“compensation” is necessary so as to fully express the information in the target text.Because of the differences in two languages, some words should be added. In addition, given that the source text mainly introduces famous western buildings, the author adds some notes for historical events and knowledge about architecture which may be unfamiliar to Chinese readers. This translation task and related research is an example of the popular science text translation guided by the Hermeneutic Motion. It also provides the author with an opportunity to understand the translation theory and valuable experience for future translation practice.
