A Report On The E-C Translation Of BMW X7 Brochure(Excerpt) Under The Guidance Of Translation Shifts Theory

With the development of economic globalization,the auto industry is booming and the volume of import and export transactions of auto products is on the rise.Against this background,the translator received the E-C translation project of BMW X7 Brochure,which was commissioned by Shandong Bestrans Intelligent Technology Co.,Ltd.The company is a professional translation company with strict control over the entire translation process,so the professionalism of the translation project can be guaranteed.The translator participates in the whole translation process.The source text is distinctive,with the complexity of technical words,promotional style,and features of objectivity.In the process of translation,the translator encounters four difficulties,i.e.the translation of hyphenated words,headlines,long sentences,and passive voice,discovers the applicability of Translation Shifts Theory to this project,and uses this theory to guide the translation practice.Under the guidance of Translation Shifts Theory,the translator conducts a case study of the translation practice with respect to the four difficulties mentioned above.With regard to hyphenated words,the translator adopts the translation methods of conversion and adaptation by combining with "class shifts" to accurately and faithfully translate hyphenated words.As for headlines,the translator selects the translation method of parody in combination with "intrasystem shifts",which retains the conciseness and appealing features of the headlines to the maximum extent.In terms of long sentences,the translator combines with "unit shifts" and employs the translation methods of division and inversion,which makes the structures and meaning of the sentence clear.For the passive voice,the translator exploits the translation method of adjustment of voice in consideration of "structure shifts" which makes the translation in line with the reading habits of the target readers.In this report,the translator applies six translation methods based on specific cases and clarifies the guiding role of Translation Shifts Theory in automobile translation.The translator hopes to provide reference on translation methods for other researchers and afford inspiration for the translation of relevant texts.
