A Report On The Translation Practice Of Low Carbon Society(Excerpt)

In this paper,Chapter 1,Chapter 2 and the first section of Chapter 3 of "Low Carbon Society" written by Hiroshi Komiyama was selected as the research object for translation practice.The text is a popularisation of scientific knowledge in the field of the environment,presenting correct knowledge about the impact of the greenhouse effect on the global environment and about energy,which helps to create environmental awareness.This paper used Toury’s translation norm theory as a guiding theory,discussed the applicability of the Toury’s translation norm theory to scientific texts in the environmental field from three aspects: preliminary norms,initial norms and operational norms,and summarized the translation strategies and specific translation methods chosen for such texts.Through this translation practice,the translator came to the following conclusions.First,in the preparatory stage of translation,based on the principle of the green development of the country,the translator chose "Low Carbon Society," a work closely related to the environment,as the translation text.This reflects the influence of preliminary norms on the choice of texts.Secondly,since the knowledge dissemination texts contain many technical terms and long and difficult sentences,it is necessary to accurately convey the author’s intentions and complete the translation in a way that is easily understood by the reader.Therefore,under the guidance of the initial norms,efforts were made to balance the "appropriateness" and "acceptability" of the translated text in the translation process.Finally,under the constraints of the operational norms,we also focused on selecting appropriate translation methods from macro and micro perspectives.Specifically speaking,under the guidance of the substratum norms,the translators utilized three methods,namely,transliteration,word order conversion,and annotation,to perfect the positional structure and completeness of the translated text.Under the influence of textual and linguistic norms,he advocated the use of existing and widely used fixed translations for proper nouns to avoid misunderstandings.And in the case of cultural terms,it is necessary to pursue the root of the word and at the same time take the meaning from the context and choose a more appropriate and understandable translation name.In this way,we will balance the "appropriateness" and "acceptability" of the translation.In this practice,we hope to combine the Toury’s translation norm theory with scientific knowledge dissemination texts in the environmental field to explore translation strategies and methods in such texts,and provide a new method for the translation of scientific knowledge dissemination texts in the environmental field in the future.
