| This paper aims to apply Halliday’s three meta-function framework to investigate the distribution of explicitations and their functions in Chinese-English simultaneous interpreting of diplomatic discourse.According to this framework, the explicitation are classified into three main types:the ideational explicitations, interpersonal explicitations, and the textual explicitaions.Through quantitative analysis, the study investigates the distribution of three main types of explicitations in Chinese-English simultaneous interpreting of diplomatic discourse. And through qualitative analysis, the study probes their functions to communication in Chinese-English simultaneous interpreting of diplomatic discourse.Quantitative analysis shows that there is extensive explicitation in Chinese-English simultaneous interpreting of diplomatic discourse despite the immediacy of interpreting and the requirement of faithfulness to source text in Government Press Conference. On the other hand, qualitative analysis shows that all three main types of explicitations are successful to facilitate communication. To be specific, the ideational explicitations function as clarification to achieve intercultural communication effectively. And interpersonal explicitations work to intensify the speaker’s attitude and standpoint. Finally, the textual explicitaions mainly serve as highlighting semantic relation between main clauses such as the logic relation in the clause. |
