With the promulgation of the "double reduction" policy and the Compulsory Education English Curriculum Standard(2022 Edition),the junior high school education has been given new requirements.Both "double reduction" and the New Curriculum Standard point out the importance of learning strategies and autonomous learning ability.Students in junior high school are required to actively try to use different learning strategies to improve learning efficiency,and initially have the ability to learn independently.Considering that most teachers are insufficiently equipped to guide students in their junior high school years to learn English effectively,and tend to neglect cultivating students’ autonomous learning ability,this study investigates the current research on English learning strategies and autonomous learning ability.It surveys 650 second-year middle school students from a school in Zhejiang Province using questionnaires and interviews.The study investigates the use of English learning strategies and the status of autonomous learning ability among these middle school students.Furthermore,it identifies the relationship between the two variables.This study mainly discusses the following three questions:1.What is the current situation of junior high school students’ use of English learning strategies?2.What is the status quo of junior high school students’ autonomous English learning ability?3.What is the correlation between junior high school students’ English learning strategies and autonomous learning ability?Based on the analysis and collation of the data,the conclusions are as follows: 1.Overall,Chinese junior high school students’ English learning strategy use ability and autonomous learning ability are at an average level.2.From the perspective of correlation,it is concluded that there is a significant correlation between junior high school students’ English learning strategies and their autonomous learning ability.3.There is a significant correlation between the six dimensions of learning strategies and students’ autonomous learning ability,and the correlation coefficient between meta-cognitive strategies and students’ autonomous learning ability is higher than other learning strategies.According to the research results,the author puts forward relevant suggestions: 1.Create a real language situation to improve students’ interest in English self-study;2.Guide the development of learning plans to enhance students’ meta-cognitive strategies;3.Conduct learning strategy training to cultivate students’ awareness of using strategies.The author aims to contribute to the advancement of English education in China by investigating the correlation between learning strategies and autonomous learning ability among junior high school students in Zhejiang Province.The findings of this research aim to enhance the understanding of English teachers and learners on the importance of learning strategies in promoting autonomous learning.Additionally,this study is expected to equip English teachers and other educators with references and suggestions to effectively cultivate students’ autonomy in learning English.
