In the English reading class,teacher feedback always plays a very important role,as students need teacher feedback to grasp the knowledge and get fully understanding.Therefore,teachers should use appropriate feedback and take students’ core literacy in the English curriculum as a standard to develop students’ abilities and focus on the major areas of listening,reading,writing,and watching during the reading class,so that an effective classroom will be created.This study investigated the use of the teacher feedback in English reading classes of senior high school during the author’s internship in order to answer the following three main questions:(1)What are the preferences for teachers using feedback in high school English reading classes?(2)What are students’ attitudes and preferences toward teacher feedback in high school English reading classes?(3)What types of teacher feedback can best promote students s’ learning initiatives?This study was conducted through class observations,questionnaires,and teacher-student interviews.The author conducted the survey and research in a senior high school in Zhanjiang City,Guangdong Province,which led to the following results:(1)After analysis with SPSS26 software,the data obtained from the classroom observations of the two teachers demonstrated several phenomenon:(1)the percentages of positive and affirmative type used by the two teachers were 74.4% and 74.8%respectively;(2)the percentages of positive and negative type used were 11.2% and7.0% respectively,(3)the percentages of negative and affirmative type used were12.6% and 16.5% respectively;(4)the percentages of negative and denial type used were 1.8% and 1.7% respectively.It can be seen that in senior high school English reading classes,teachers mainly use positive feedback to promote the class efficiency.(2)The questionnaires from 120 students disclosed that the majority of students preferred positive feedback from teachers in the reading classes,and that simple praise or affirmation from teachers is preferred,while negative feedback had more negative effects on students.(3)The teacher-student interviews revealed that positive feedback used by teachers have more positive effects on students.When students receive appropriate praise or encouragement from teachers,they are easier to be motivated to learn and learning more effectively.Therefore,teachers should self-examine and adjust their use of feedback in high school English reading class as much as possible.At the same time,they should also play a crucial role in feedback language,in order to generate effective classrooms teaching for students. |
