| The Economist is globally recognized as the most influential authoritative Englishlanguage weekly magazine.Its editorials focus on tracking and reporting on social hot topics,providing substantial information,and shaping public opinion and values within the Western mainstream media.This report selects 40 editorials published between March 2021 and January 2022.Based on systemic functional linguistics,it employs the transitivity system as the analytical perspective,using a combined approach of theoretical analysis and practical case studies to free the translated text from the constraints of the source language and better meet readers’ expectations.During the translation process,the most prominent feature observed by the author in the original text is the high lexical density and abstract expression in the form of nominalization,which increase the difficulty of translation.English nominalization structures possess dual semantic features,which hinder the clarification of semantic relationships in the source text.Moreover,certain nominalization structures have fixed center words that express nominal properties,presenting significant formal differences between English and Chinese,making it difficult to achieve direct semantic and structural equivalence.Based on a thorough understanding of the original text,the author conducted an in-depth analysis of its language characteristics,writing style,and discourse structure.Three types of nominalization structures were identified as the most frequently used:verbs or adjectives nominalization,v-ing nominalization,and nominal clauses introduced by "that" or wh-words.The guiding role of transitivity systems in translating nominalization was explored,and translation methods for different types of nominalization structures from the perspective of transitivity systems were summarized.Through this translation practice,the author gained a deeper understanding of nominalization structures,improved the translation proficiency of news commentary texts,and provided reference material for writing similar translation practice reports. |
