| This thesis reports the English-Chinese translation process for the Ocha Mine Project Draft Environmental Impact Statement, an English Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the purpose of managing, protecting and improving the affected environment. During the translation, the author addressed the difficulty and importance of accurately translating of main verb in one clause. Since different verbs convey the corresponding condition, it is essential to appropriately achieve the verb translation accurately to convey the original, which is the focus of this translation report. This report intends to apply Halliday’s transitivity system into EIA text, discuss the main verb of six processes, analyze the main process of clause types, participants and their circumstantial element, and then choose the main verb most consistent with the original meaning and close to the target language, so as to reproduce the primitive information as exactly as possible. There are six types of transitivity process types:material process, verbal process, relational process, mental process, existential process and behavioral process. It is noted, which is consistent with the objective of the EIA text, that material process is the dominant one in the original text. This shows that the EIA text mainly describes objective things, focuses on actual events and reflects its authenticity.The main body of the report, through the analysis of the representative examples, analyzes the guiding significance of transitivity theory to the EIA text translation practice. It is found that the transitivity theory can help to understand the source text, accurately express the original information and improve the quality of translation. Attempts are made to validate the feasibility and the universality of its application. The Transitivity system provides a new perspective for translators to understand the EIA text, and translation skills for text translation and translation collation. |
