Four-word style refers to a literary form composed of stanzas of four-word sentences, which are scattered in poems, fugue, enjoining, decree, and proverbs, carrying important functions such as praise, satire, lyricism, and speech. The four-word style is the most clearly developed and complete neatly style in the pre-Qin,Han,Wei and Jin dynasties, and it is also the style most influenced by political rituals. After the Han Dynasty, with the establishment of Confucian orthodoxy, the interaction between the four-word writing style and the function of the style continued, moving from practical value to formal value, resulting in the solidification of the four-word style and its eventual elimination by the times. The evolution of the writing style and the construction of discourse authority are the key to the rise and fall of the four-word style, reflecting its development in the pre-Qin,Han,Wei and Jin periods. The paper consists of four chapters, which are devoted to the construction of the authority of quatrain discourse, the establishment of the quatrain writing tradition in the preQin period, the changes in the quatrain writing style in the Han,Wei,Jin periods, and the decline of the authority in four-word style writing. The introductory section introduces the object of this paper, the current status of contemporary research on the tetrameter, and the research proposal developed on the basis of existing research. The first chapter discusses the process of constructing the discourse authority of the quatrain. On the one hand, the discourse authority of the four-word style is based on political rituals. On the one hand, the writing characteristics of the four-word style meet the writing needs of specific subjects and establish the discourse authority on politics and rituals in the writing of rituals and official documents. On the other hand,as Confucianism promoted the orthodox status of Classics Scholarship, the four-word style established discourse authority in literature. The process of constructing the discursive authority of the four-word style was also a process of finding a writing style that met the needs of the four-word style in its own development. The second chapter traces the formation of the tetrameter writing tradition in the preQin period.Initially presented as prose sentences, the four-word style developed in parallel with the changing occasions and socio-linguistic development of the Song styles and Ya Song styles. At the same time, with the consciousness of the writing style and the maturation of the composition of the four-word style,a writing style unique to the four-word style was formed. The third chapter analyzes the development of the four-word style in the Han,Wei and Jin dynasties.Analyzes the succession of the Han Dynasty’s four-word style to the Ya Song style in terms of subject matter and writing form, and the development of the structure of the length of the poem, and the succession of the gift and reply poem to the elegant ode style and the retrospection of the Poem of the dead to the Shi Jing in the Wei and Jin Dynasties under the retrospective trend,as well as the breakthrough of the Xuan Yan poem to the fourword style of the Shi Jing. The fourth chapter analyzing the historical reasons for the decline of the authority of tetrameter discourse. The use of the four-word style in rituals, public documents, and literature originated from its practical functions, and the formal functions established in these spheres of application were subsequently reverted to the four-word style, helping to build its discursive authority on the one hand, and limiting the diversity of its writing development on the other. The development of the tetrasyllabic style tended to solidify by the Han Dynasty, and even though new changes were attempted during the Wei and Jin Dynasties,it could not keep up with the popular aesthetic trend, but the literary value of the tetrasyllabic style itself was preserved. As the earliest and most mature Qi Yan style in ancient China, its sentence composition and stylistic norms have profoundly influenced the development of later literary styles. The sentence formation and writing techniques of the four-word style have also been continued in many other literary styles. |
