The development of a language pushes forward the growth of the reading materials related to the language.Today,as Chinese learning has gone viral around the world,more and more Chinese learners have decided to learn Chinese through reading.In recent years,with the introduction of graded reading materials,Chinese second language graded reading materials have gradually drawn the attention of the academic circle.Adults stand as a key group of Chinese learners,and the research on Chinese graded reading materials for adults shall be prioritized.Most of the current research focuses on the text difficulty and level setting,and the research on the material selection is relatively weak.However,as an integral factor in reading materials,the selection of materials is relevant to the quality of the whole reading material and the suitability of the selected articles in the reading material.This is worthy of attention in the compilation of reading materials.Also,the selection of reading materials is also directly related to the reading effect of readers,and has a certain impact on readers’ Chinese learning.As such,it is highly necessary to study the selection of reading materials for adults.This paper takes "Good Friends: Chinese Graded Reading Materials"(Adult Edition)(hereinafter referred to as "Good Friends")as the research object.The theme,genre,cultural items and other aspects of the reading material are summarized and analyzed comprehensively using several research methods such as the literature research method,comparative analysis method,and text data summary method to describe in detail the layout characteristics of the reading material in the aspects of theme,genre,and cultural items,and point out the merits and downsides of the reading material in the material selection,providing compilation inspiration for the future Chinese graded reading materials material selection.The paper falls into five parts: The first chapter is the introduction,mainly including the purpose and significance of the research,the general situation of the research object,and the summary of the related research and the research method.The second chapter is the study of the theme of "Good Friends".Principally,the former definition of the concept of "theme" is combined to determine the classification standard of the theme in this paper.Summarize and analyze the theme types of the whole reading material through the standard,analyzing the features presented in the theme.The third chapter is the study of the genre of "Good Friends".Mainly,the classification of genres by predecessors and the classification of genres in domestic Chinese teaching are combined,dividing the genres of reading into five types: narrative essay,expository essay,argumentative essay,practical essay,and poetry.Then,analyze the distribution characteristics and rule by summarizing the genre types of the whole reading material based on the standard.The fourth chapter is the study of the cultural items of the whole volume of "Good Friends".Mainly,the classification standards of the predecessors for the cultural items are taken as the basis to establish a cultural item classification table.Based on the classification standard,the cultural items in the reading material are summarized and classified,exploring the selection and arrangement characteristics of the cultural content.The fifth chapter combines the characteristics of the reading materials in the selection,summarizes the advantages and disadvantages in the selection of materials,providing some references and suggestions for the selection of Chinese graded reading materials in the future.
