Giuseppe Castiglione was one of the most important painters in the Qing court. He came to China as a dual figure, serving as both a missionary and a palace painter. He went through the Kang,Yong, and Qian dynasties and had an artistic career of over 50 years. He was one of the pioneers of early exchanges between Chinese and Western art.Due to the implementation of the "ban on teaching" policy,Giuseppe Castiglione had to find a breakthrough in painting. He active learning Chinese traditional painting skills and culture, catered to the different requirements of the emperor, actively explored and changed his own painting style, and formed a Chinese and Western painting style.Due to the lack of interest in his pen and ink,Giuseppe Castiglione created with other painters under the intervention of the court sponsor, which also included Giuseppe Castiglione’s desire for change.Giuseppe Castiglione’s works with Chinese painters include seasonal paintings, landscape paintings, imperial paintings and historical documentary paintings. The works not only conform to the aesthetic interest of the court and the style of literati painting, but also have the spirit of western science and technology and realistic skills. On the whole, they show a unique combination of Chinese and Western styles, which has affected the development of Chinese painting to a certain extent. The article is mainly divided into five parts. The first chapter mainly analyzes the causes of Giuseppe Castiglione’s style from the subjective and objective perspectives; The second chapter comments on the mutual influence of Giuseppe Castiglione and other court painters by enumerating their records and analyzing their important works of art;In the third chapter, through the analysis and research of the differences in aesthetic ideas, space concepts and ink language between Chinese and Western arts, the specific style characteristics of Giuseppe Castiglione’s combined strokes,as well as the integration and innovation in technology, provide a paradigm and experience for the cultural and artistic exchanges between China and the West; The fourth chapter summarizes the form and theme of Giuseppe Castiglione’s works, and makes textual research and interpretation on the theme of his works; The fifth chapter draws a conclusion that Chinese painting should be based on the foundation in the cultural and artistic exchanges between China and the West, move towards innovation in the process of inheritance, and open up new artistic horizons and creative ways through the research on the evaluation of Giuseppe Castiglione’s combination of strokes in art history and the impact of combination of strokes on modern art.
