English reading is an important way to acquire knowledge. In English teaching, cultivating and improving students’ reading ability is the key to improving teaching quality.English reading teaching is also the focus of teachers’ attention.Hierarchical teaching is a process in which teachers make plans ahead of teaching activities, design flexible teaching content for students based on their interests, learning habits, and learning status, then make adjustments based on actual situations,so that each student can learn efficiently.Introducing hierarchical teaching into English classroom teaching can meet the needs of students at different levels and address the shortcomings of existing reading teaching. This study applies the hierarchical teaching model to English reading teaching in senior high schools, with the aim of discussing the impact of the hierarchical teaching model on senior high school students’ English reading ability. It attempts to answer three research questions as follows:(1)What effect does the hierarchical teaching model have on the classroom atmosphere of senior high school students?(2)What effect does the hierarchical teaching model have on senior high school students’ English reading abilities?(3)What effect does the hierarchical teaching model have on senior high school students’ interest in English learning? In order to verify the practical operability, applicability, and effectiveness of the hierarchical teaching method, this thesis conducted a 16-week teaching experiment with 112 students in two parallel classes of Grade 2 in a senior high school in Dalian. The experiment randomly selected one of the two classes as the experimental class and the other as the control class. Before the teaching experiment, the English level of the two classes was equivalent. The experimental class adopted hierarchical teaching model, while the control class adopted traditional teaching model. The experiment used tests, classroom observations, questionnaires, interviews and other tools. After the experiment, the author compared and analyzed the pre and post test scores of the two classes, and then analyzed and discussed the experimental results, referring to the observation and communication with students during the teaching process. The study has found that the hierarchical teaching model has a positive impact on senior high school students’ English reading.Compared with traditional teaching models, hierarchical teaching of English reading can more effectively promote the development of English reading teaching and help students improve their English reading performance. After the teaching experiment, the students in the experimental class outperformed the students in the control class in terms of reading ability, learning interest, and classroom enthusiasm.Compared with traditional reading teaching methods, hierarchical teaching can stimulate students’ interest in reading, change their negative reading attitudes, improve their reading performance, and narrow the gap of students’ English reading scores. Therefore, the hierarchical teaching model is feasible in English reading teaching in senior high schools. The application study of hierarchical teaching can help the theory into practice in order to verify the feasibility of relevant theories. On the other hand,it expands the methods of English reading teaching. In addition, this study can promote the widespread application of hierarchical teaching to a certain extent. It is of great value for teachers to teach English reading in senior high schools. The author believes that hierarchical teaching will definitely provide a new direction and practical model for English reading teaching in China in the future.
