This thesis is a translation practice report of English to Chinese translation. The original text is excerpted from the first six chapters of My Wife and I by Harriet Beecher Stowe. My Wife and I is a long novel about the main character Harry Henderson’s pursuit of an “ideal wife” from adolescence to adulthood, his participation in writing about women’s liberation, and the ultimate search for true love. The translator adopts the interpersonal metafunction of Halliday’s Systemic Functional Grammar to analyze the mood and modality of the novel, focusing on the dialogue between the main character and others to depict his continuous clarification of the image of “wife”,and analyzing it with typical cases in translation practice,so as to explore the significance of Systemic Functional Grammar for the mood and modality of the novel in translation. The meaning of Systemic Functional Grammar in the translation of novels is also discussed in this report. This translation report includes five parts: translation project introduction, translation practice process, translation theory overview, project case study and translation practice summary. The translation project introduction mainly includes the background of the translated text, the purpose and significance of this translation practice;the translation practice process mainly describes the work done by the translator before, while and after the translation;the translation theory overview introduces the origin and development of Systemic Functional Grammar and its main ideas;the case analysis of the project first introduces the discourse modality and mood in novel translation and literary discourse, and then focuses on the analysis of specific cases using the interpersonal function theory under Systemic Functional Grammar;the translation practice summary section introduces the gains and shortcomings of this translation practice and the inspirations brought to the translators during this practice.Through the translation practice,it can be concluded that Systemic Functional Grammar is significant for the translation of fictional moods, and can help translators in dealing with characters’ moods in fictional texts well enough.
