A Report On The Translation Of Invisible Child (Excerpts)

This report is based on Andrea Elliott’s work Invisible Child,with excerpts from one to eight chapters for translation and discussion.Combined with literary narration and policy analysis,this work successfully tells the true story of a homeless girl in New York.And this work not only reveals the failure of public services in American government agencies,but also explores the lives of those who have been neglected.This work has not yet been translated into Chinese.Invisible Child is a typical non-fiction literary work,and the balance between authenticity and literariness is the main problem that the translator faces in translation.In view of this,the translator chooses the theory of translation variation as the guiding theory of this project,and discusses the guiding role of different translation methods in the translation of non-fiction literary works from the aspects of "addition,adaptation and edition".When the information of the translation is insufficient,the translator adopts the method of addition to add the interpretation of culture-loaded words,the cultural background of proper nouns and the symbolic meaning of special words,so as to ensure the integrity of the translation and fill the information gap of target readers.When the information of the translation is unidiomatic,the translator adopts the method of adaptation to change the inappropriate presentation of slang,the ambiguous connotation of words and the particular structure of expressions,so as to improve the acceptability of the translation and lighten the reading burden of target readers.When the information of the translation is disorganized,the translator adopts the translation method of edition to edit the contradictory logical order of words,the scattered forms of simple sentences and the unclear logic of complex sentences,so as to enhance the logicality of the translation and meet the reading needs of target readers.Generally speaking,the application of translation variation methods under the guidance of translation variation theory in the translation of non-fiction literary works can not only improve the quality of the translation,but also help to better convey the connotation of the original text.
