| This report is a practice report on the E-C translation of the prologue to Chapter 2 of the novel The Invisible Woman by Erika Robuck,an American novelist. The Invisible Woman tells how the famous American spy Virginia Hall worked as a secret agent in occupied France to help the Allies win WWII.The translation practice is an attempt to translate historical fiction under the guidance of relevance theory. The translation practice report is guided by the relevance theory, and makes case study from the lexical and the syntactical levels. In the process, the translator adopts different translation methods, such as substitution and annotation. In addition, the translator adopts translation strategies of free translation and domestication as well as some effective translation techniques, such as conversion and negation.Based on case study,it finds that:1)At the lexical level, the cultural images and proper nouns can be dealt with by employing domesticating translation and annotation;2)at the syntactical level,in consideration of the different cognition and expressional habits between the English and Chinese,it is advisable to make free translation and choose the appropriate translating methods accordingly. The report has bettered my understanding of relevance theory and translation. It is hoped that the effort of the translator could provide a useful reference for the translation and study of literary works of the same type. |
