| In 2017,Cai Guoqiang started a personal project called "One Person’s Journey to the History of Western Art",which mainly includes: "October"(2017,Russia,National Pushkin Museum of Plastic Arts),"Spirit of Painting: Cai Guoqiang in Prado"(2017,Spain,Prado Museum),"Flower Song: Cai Guoqiang in Ufizi"(2018,Italy,Ufizi Museum)"In the Volcano: Cai Guoqiang and Pompeii"(2019,Italy,National Archaeological Museum of Naples and the Ancient City of Pompeii),and "Non Brand"(2019,United States,Guggenheim Museum,New York)are a combination of exhibitions. In each exhibition,Cai Guoqiang conducts a dialogue with the tradition, culture, and art history represented by his collection through creation. In this study,we try to explore the relationship between the project and memory, identity and tradition by taking the works, exhibitions and other contents in the project of "One Person’s Journey to Western Art History" as clues, and taking the theory of "cultural memory" as the entry point. This study is mainly divided into four parts: The first part discusses how memory is presented in projects through media such as events and places, relying on forms such as fireworks and explosions performances and gunpowder paintings. The second part, taking specific exhibitions in Moscow,Prado,Florence,Pompeii, and New York as clues, explores the relationship between exhibitions and cultural identity in the project. The third part, taking the interaction between works such as "Sky Flower City: Florence Day Fireworks Project" and "Self portrait" with Western classic works as examples, demonstrates Cai Guoqiang’s traditional reconstruction methods and techniques in the project. The fourth part analyzes the new tradition of Western art history that Cai Guoqiang strives to construct from his personal perspective. To sum up,this project is an art project based on the shared culture and memory between the East and the West.It demonstrates a new mode of communication and integration of traditional cultures from different regions. |
