Reproduction Of Interpersonal Meaning In Fictional Dialogue Translation From The Perspective Of Interpersonal Metaphor

This translation report is based on the translation practice of the novel Breaker Boy.There are a large number of dialogues,which contain rich interpersonal meaning,and interpersonal meaning plays a vital role in fiction in that.Speakers can express interpersonal meaning through dialogues,convey their own views,attitudes,identities and status,and influence others’ thoughts and behaviors.In literary works,dialogues do not have the same intonation as in real life or videos,so it is necessary for the translator to feel and capture the subtleties,then analyze and translate them in specific contexts.Therefore,how to reproduce the interpersonal meaning expressed in these dialogues in the target language through dialogue translation is the focus and difficulty of this translation practice.This report is based on the interpersonal metaphor of Systemic Functional Linguistics and discusses the reproduction of interpersonal meaning in the dialogues of Breaker Boy.Interpersonal metaphor refers to the incongruity between language form and meaning in the process of expressing interpersonal meaning,mainly including modality metaphor and mood metaphor.It is one of the important means to realize interpersonal meaning.This translation report attempts to use the interpersonal metaphor to discuss the modality and mood in the dialogue translation of Breaker Boy and their interpersonal meaning,mainly from modality metaphor and mood metaphor.This report classifies the dialogues according to whether there are modality metaphors or mood metaphors,and then tentatively proposes the translation strategies through case analyses.When there are metaphors in the original dialogues,the interpersonal meaning can be reproduced by using the translation strategy of preservation or demetaphorization;when there are no metaphors in the original dialogues,the translation strategy of congruent form or metaphorical form can be used;specifically,the translation methods of literal translation,amplification,word order adjustment,omission and conversion(modality orientation conversion and mood conversion)can be used to reproduce the interpersonal meaning of the original.This translation report proves the appliability of interpersonal metaphor framework on fictional dialogue translation,thereby reproducing the interpersonal meaning in it.In addition,for the translation strategies and methods of interpersonal metaphor,the translator needs to analyze and choose according to the specific context and interpersonal meaning conveyed by the dialogues,hoping to provide the reference for the reproduction of interpersonal meaning in fictional dialogue translation.
