Yan Lianke is one of the most influential writers in the contemporary Chinese literary world. His four series of novels have a main thread running through the whole process of seeking innovation and change, that is,the concern for human survival and the value of life.Based on Foucault’s heterotopia theory, this paper makes a holistic study of Yan Lianke’s novel creation process. In the process of reading, the author found that there is a "heterotopia" space in most of Yan Lianke’s works. It exists as the "other" opposite to the social world, and its significance is shown in the tortuous mapping relationship between heterogeneous space and reality. This paper intends to interpret and analyze Yan Lianke’s novels through Foucault’s theory of "heterotopia",providing a new theoretical perspective for the study and interpretation of Yan Lianke’s novels. The introduction part briefly introduces Yan Lianke’s general situation of creation, the raising of questions, and the research ideas and research values of this paper. The first chapter focuses on the theoretical analysis of the relationship between the special space in Yan Lianke’s novels and Foucault’s heterotopia. The first section starts with Chen Xiaoming’s use of the theory of heterotopia to analyze the book "shouhuo",and basically leads to the relevant theories used in this paper. The second section focuses precisely on the main body of space explained in this article-the cemetery, and demonstrates the corresponding relationship between the cemetery space and the theory of heterotopia, which appears in a large number in Yan Lianke’s novels from a macro perspective. The third section analyzes the origin of Yan Lianke’s construction of an alternative space full of ghosts from the perspective of the writer’s life experience, the background of the times and the history of literary reading and acceptance. The second chapter focuses on the construction of alternative space in Yan Lianke’s novels from the perspective of close reading of the text and analysis of artistic characteristics, which is mainly divided into two sections. The first part mainly focuses on the main images of the cemetery, coffin, the dead, the body, the dream and so on,and analyzes and interprets the mirror relationship between the extreme scenes and special space filled with ghosts in Yan Lianke’s novels and Foucault’s heterotopia space. The second part interprets Yan Lianke’s novels from the perspective of narratology, and analyzes the important role of heterotopia theory in the artistic construction of Yan Lianke’s novel world from the aspects of carnival spirit, narrative strategy, language characteristics, etc. The third chapter analyzes the unique significance of the "heterotopia" world in Yan Lianke’s novels, which is divided into two sections. The first section analyzes Yan Lianke’s "betrayal" of realism theory, the creation of the concept of divinity and realism, and his attention to absurd art from the perspective of aesthetic significance. The second section analyzes Yan Lianke’s concern about human survival dilemma, human resistance in desperate circumstances and his preference for religious salvation spirit from the construction level of philosophical significance. Finally, the conclusion summarizes the discussion of this article, and points out the reason why Yan Lianke was ignored by the history of literature and the expectation of the author’s future creation.
