The protection of intangible cultural heritage has been a topic of significant global interest over a protracted period, offering a reflection of the connotation and cognitive mode of regional cultures, and facilitating exploration into the fundamental spiritual property of national cultures.Due to the effects of modern industrial civilization, traditional handicraft forms have faced a crisis of limited development and inheritance channels, requiring interdisciplinary approaches to explore potential dissemination directions. As an illustrative literature form primarily intended for children, picture books have enjoyed prolonged popularity in the book market, with broad reading foundations both domestically and abroad.Employing picture books as a medium to present China’s intangible cultural heritage information holds the potential for not only fostering a wider knowledge of traditional cultural values among children and their parents, but also providing significant influence on the growth of children in terms of Chinese spiritual values and aesthetic orientations.Furthermore, picture books serve as a vital mechanism for establishing a national image overseas, and offer a diverse range of channels for the inheritance of intangible cultural heritage.Lacquer thread sculpture,a distinctive intangible cultural heritage handicraft technique in Fujian, demands high material and process requirements, with its high cost and difficulty directly leading to a narrow audience, and it is only available in the handicraft market, with little public understanding of it.In modern art with intangible cultural heritage culture as the creative theme, the form of picture books with both text and illustrations can effectively restore its production process and appearance, and narrate its history and present situation in a child-friendly manner. This thesis takes lacquer thread sculpture as an example, using literature analysis, field research, case analysis, and design practice methods to explore the transformation and application of intangible cultural heritage in children’s picture books. This study is based on an overview of the relationship between the lacquer thread carving and children’s picture books, which examines the content and form of expression of this intangible cultural heritage. The study identifies the target audience for the picture books and analyzes their characteristics, and summarizes three creative principles for non-heritage handicraft picture book creation.Furthermore,it analyzes existing picture book examples on the market and proposes a creative direction for the lacquer thread carving picture book in terms of style, characters, and text based on the analysis and reflection of existing non-heritage culture picture books. Finally, the study combines theoretical research with practical design and innovatively creates a picture book entitled "The Story of Lacquer Thread Carving," which combines non-heritage culture with modern trends, and evaluates its dissemination effect. This research combines picture books with intangible cultural heritage, providing new inspiration and practical experience for local original picture books, and also offering new exploratory ideas for the inheritance and promotion of intangible cultural heritage.
