Nowadays, the text involving diet culture,a special kind of social science text, plays an important role in transmitting the correct dietary concept and guiding people’s dietary practice along with people’s increasingly improved health awareness. The translation of such books can not only enrich the reading materials in Chinese but also provide a channel for people of different languages to communicate about the diet philosophy of their societies. As a social science text on diet culture, the book Intuitive Eating and Leaving Your Life Around Food Behind is both theoretical and practical, informative and expressive, attaching importance to the social and cultural context. With a large number of long sentences containing various postpositive attributives, the text conveys rich information while carrying out powerful discussions. These postpositive attributives have different forms and are mixed with other sentence components, which makes it difficult to achieve a balance between sentence structure and semantic coherence in the translation from English to Chinese, and that causes certain difficulties and interference to the translator.Given this, this report firstly classifies postpositive attributives in the source text into four categories via the grammatical component: adjective phrases,non-predicate verbs, prepositional phrases, and attributive clauses. With the guidance of Relevance Translation Theory, the author’s intention is reasonably and clearly inferred through the communicative clues reflected in different kinds of postpositive attributives.Taking into account the cognitive context and expectations of the target readers, the corresponding translation methods are summarized under the orientation of “letting the target readers get the best correlation with the least processing effort”: First of all,for adjective phrases, according to the contextual hypothesis embodied in different contexts, the method of fronting and class shift could be adopted to preserve the correlation between the original proposition and the contextual hypothesis,so as to minimize the cognitive efforts of target readers;Secondly, for non-predicate verbs, the method of fronting, integrating and utilization of anaphora can be used to express the implied background information to restore the contextual effect of the original text.Thirdly, for prepositional phrases, the best correlation can be created utilizing the method of fronting and division. Finally, for attributive clauses, division, utilization of anaphora as well as conversion can be adopted to make the target readers better understand the original author’s intention and reduce their processing efforts in reading.
