Translation Strategies Of Complex Sentences In Social Science Texts From The Perspective Of Communicative Translation Theory

The translation practice report is from The Future of War,which was written by Lawrence Freedman.In the book,the author expressed his views on several major wars in the world,made assumptions about the possible forms of future wars,and condemned the occurrence of wars.The book can be regarded as the decision-maker's preferred reading material and is of high translation value.The translated version helps countries to develop a course of action to ensure safety and avoid disasters.The translation material of this translation practice report is excerpted from the introduction of The Future of War and Chapter Two Indecisive Battle.There are large numbers of English complex sentences in this book,which will pose certain difficulties to the translator in understanding and translating the original text.Communicative translation theory aims at reproducing the original meaning of the original text,centering on the reader,and paying attention to the social influence and value of the translated text.As a result,this report dwells on how to solve this problem with the help of communicative translation theory.The report consists of five chapters.Chapter One is an introduction,which introduces the source text and the significance of this translation practice.Chapter Two describes the translation process: pre-translation preparation,the translation stage and the post-translation management.Chapter Three is the theoretical framework,introducing the communicative translation theory and the principles for translating English complex sentences under communicative translation theory.Chapter Four introduces the definition and classification of English complex sentences and discusses the translation methods of complex sentences in social science texts from the perspective of communicative translation theory with specific cases.Chapter Five summarizes the translation project,the translator's translation experience and limitations.Through the research on the translation of English complex sentences in this translation practice report,the translator finds that the use of division,amplification,embedding,recasting and synthesis to translate English complex sentences in social science texts can ensure the appropriateness and fluency of a translated version and echo the habits of Chinese way of expression and,more importantly,the translated text can have a better communicative efficiency,so that the target language readers can have a deeper understanding of military and historical knowledge.
