| The source text of this translation report is excerpted from the Chinese book Here Flows the Honghe River with distinct ethnic characteristics,which belongs to the ethnic literature of Yunnan Province,China.The first chapter of the book focusing on the customs and distinctive culture of the Dai ethnic group is chosen as the translation project.There are many descriptions of local dialects and folk songs in the text,which are the key points needing the translator’s attention in the process of translation.The Chinese-English translation of this project is indispensable for spreading distinctive Chinese culture and enhancing cultural confidence.This is the translator’s focus,hoping to contribute to the spread of Chinese ethnic culture and let more people appreciate the Dai culture.This translation project is guided by translator behavior criticism.From such a perspective,the translator,who is at the center of the translation process,constructs the “Truth-seeking—Utility-attaining” Continuum Mode of Evaluation,highlighting the influence of translator attributes and behavior on the quality of the translation.The translator combines this theory with specific translation methods and strategies to guide this translation project.Under the guidance of translator behavior criticism,the translator analyses the difficulties encountered in the translation process in lexical,syntactic,rhetorical and rhythmic terms,combining them with specific cases in translation practice,attempts to seek the truth in the source text in line with the principle of “truthseeking being the base with utility-attaining as the aim”,adopts appropriate translation methods and strategies to achieve an accurate,fluent and readable translation through reasonable translator behavior and practical attitude.In addition,the corresponding translation methods and strategies are also employed,including amplification and equivalence at the lexical level,division and condensation at the syntactic level,literal and free translation at the rhetorical level,and adaptation and alienation at the rhythmic level.Through this translation report,the translator believes that translator behavior criticism has good guiding value in the Chinese-English translation of ethnic literature,hoping that this report can provide some feasible methods for the type of translation. |
