A Study On The Construction Of Dynamic Discourse Space Of Cooperative Diplomatic Discourse From The Perspective Of Critical Cognitive Linguistics

The most recent development in Critical Cognitive Linguistics is the shift from conflictual discourse to the cognitive-symbolic mechanism of cooperative discourse.As essential tools of critical cognitive analysis,discourse space theories primarily focus on the conflictual discourse containing antithetical value orientations and ignore the cooperative characteristics of discourse.Its spatial concept of “us versus them”dichotomy is inappropriate for studying and interpreting cooperative discourse.The concept of “win-win cooperation” is increasingly popular in international relations,and cooperative diplomatic discourse is expanding.In particular,the Chinese government has emphasized the significance of building “a community with a shared future for mankind” on different diplomatic occasions,which has positively affected the evolution of modern international relations.Some previous studies have attempted to establish the extended framework based on Deictic Space Theory to explore the discourse space construction of the cooperative diplomatic discourse.Although they paid attention to the extensibility of the discourse space,they lacked lexico-grammatical categories with cognitive pragmatic properties and disregarded the cognitive effect of emotion between discourse representation and discourse purpose.They failed to elaborate on the dynamic construction process of cooperative diplomatic discourse space.This study seeks to modify the framework of Proximization Theory and develop a dynamic analysis framework for cooperative diplomatic discourse space.The research object consists of 96 speeches with the theme of “a community with a shared future for mankind” delivered by the national leader and foreign minister on various diplomatic occasions.The study attempts to explore lexico-grammatical items and the influence of emotion using qualitative and quantitative analysis to reveal the dynamic construction process of cooperative diplomatic discourse space.The findings obtained from the study show that: the discourse of “a community with a shared future” presents an open and inclusive discourse space that extends from the interior to the exterior along the three axes.The process is as follows:(1)On the spatial dimension,the discourse eliminates the boundaries between individuals and expands the scope of the community through locative noun phrases and motion verb phrases,evoking the feelings of “intimacy” and “belonging” in the listeners.And then,the positive impact of the community on the individual is manifested through action verb phrases and abstract noun phrases,and the feelings of “hope” and“appreciation” are evoked.It demonstrates that the proximity on the spatial dimension is from “individual” to “community”.(2)On the temporal dimension,the discourse uses definite temporal adverbials and noun phrases construed as actual impacts in the past temporal frames to review the history,evoking a sense of “trust” in the listeners.Through the definite temporal adverbials,modal auxiliary and noun phrases construed as presupposition of conditions in the future temporal frames,the discourse looks into the future and evokes a sense of “expectation”.The proximity of the present to the past and the future is shown on this dimension.(3)On the axiological dimension,the discourse equates the individual and community values,evoking a sense of“yearning”,and compares the positive and negative values,evoking a sense of“pursuing profit”.It demonstrates that the proximity is from “individual value” to“community value” on this dimension.Finally,the construction of “a community with a shared future” is legitimized and the discourse purpose is achieved in this discourse space through discourse representations and the effect of positive emotions on spatial,temporal and axiological dimensions.At the theoretical level,this study attempts to adjust and expand the theoretical framework of Proximization Theory and establish an analysis framework for cooperative diplomatic discourse space,compensating for the limitations of existing discourse space theories and enriching the research path of Critical Cognitive Linguistics.At the practical level,this study analyzes the construction strategy and cognitive mechanism of cooperative diplomatic discourse space,which helps to explain the connotation of cooperative diplomatic discourse.It contributes to enlightenment for enhancing national discourse ability and international discourse power and constructing a diplomatic discourse system with Chinese characteristics.
