| Taking language as study object,Critical Discourse Analysis(CDA)is used to analyze the social context of the process of production, distribution and reception of discourse, aiming to study the interaction between ideology and discourse and how both originate from and serve social structures and power relations.Using three-dimensional framework proposed by Fairclough, this paper conducts a critical discourse analysis on the English translation of the book On Building A Human Community with A Shared Future from three levels:text, discourse practice and social practice, and from four perspectives:modality, transitivity, classification and transformation. As a collection of speeches delivered by General Secretary Xi Jinping on major political occasions, which reflect the stance of Chinese government and sever political and diplomatic purposes, the book is deeply influenced by ideology.Through the analysis of the original text and the translated text, the thesis aims to analyze the linguistic features and textual effects of the original text and the translated text, and to explore the influence of ideology on translation. The analysis shows that,in terms of linguistic features and textual effects, the number of modal verbs in the translation is much higher than that in the original text, and the translator used more middle-value and high-value modal verbs, and the amplified the first-person plural pronoun "we" to strengthen the tone of the translation, which allows the speaker--General Secretary Xi Jinping to effectively adjust the distance between the speaker and hearers and enhances the authority of the Chinese government. And the more use of material processes, relational processes and existential processes in describing the event makes the description appear in a more objective form and promotes the acceptance of the Chinese government’s proposals. The choice of appropriate English words to accurately express the meaning of the Chinese words accurately conveys the Chinese government’s meaning, avoiding ambiguity and misunderstanding.More passive structures used in the translation keep the formal nature of the speeches, demonstrating the Chinese government’s awareness of its responsibilities and its determination to build the international community. The translator’s necessary shift of the linguistic structures are subordinated to the aim of promoting international communication and creating a good image of China. This study explores the application of CDA in translation of political text, which is expected to provide a reference for similar studies. |
