The translation practice is based on the article “The Spirit of Integrity in Guilin Landscape Culture” from Chapter 3 of Humanities and Tourism Culture of Guangxi written by Professor Huang Weilin of Guangxi Normal University. The article connects the green-lotus-like landscapes in Guilin with the local integrity culture, citing a large number of stories about righteous officials, ancient poems about landscapes and culture, and classics about clean governance in Guilin. At present, many of the research on tourism translation in China focuses on the theoretical level, and there are few studies on the translation of specific cultural connotation in tourist materials concerning tourism destinations. Therefore, the translation practice aims to introduce Guilin’s landscapes and integrity culture to the world and promote related studies at home and abroad. It is hoped that the translation practice will help with the development of tourism in Guilin and the promotion of Chinese clean governance culture. The thesis is a translation practice report discussing the translation of“The Spirit of Integrity in Guilin Landscape Culture.” Under the guidance of Susan Bassnett’s cultural translation theory, the translator adopted translation methods including literal translation, transliteration followed by notes, free translation, amplification and rewriting to solve translation difficulties in translating culture-specific items and ancient Chinese classics. The culture-specific items in the original text are divided into five classes, which are material,historical,linguistic,names-of-places and titles-of-classics culture-specific items;ancient Chinese classics are divided into three types including classics of philosophy,of poetry and essays and of practical writings. When rendering material culture-specific items, the translator applies free translation and transliteration followed by notes, giving readers direct images of objects unique to Chinese culture. When translating historical culture-specific items, the translator clarifies the historical background and connotation by amplification and in-text notes. When translating linguistic culture-specific items, the translator applies transliteration followed by in-text notes to explain the connotation of the linguistic and cultural elements under Chinese cultural context. When translating culture-specific items of names of places, the translator adopts transliteration and notes. When translating culture-specific items of titles of classics, the translator mainly adopts free translation. When translating classics of philosophy, the translator first renders ancient Chinese into modern Chinese by intralingual translation, then explains exclusive Chinese literary concepts, paying special attention to overall coherence. When translating classics of poetry and essays, the translator first grasps both literal and profound meaning of the text, then renders the core meaning in poetic rhyme to maintain the flavor of poems. When translating classics of practical writings, the translator mainly focuses on creating a smooth and approachable translation in order to convey the original purpose of persuasion and guidance. After finishing the translation practice report, the translator has basically grasped the features, translation theories and translation skills of relevant types of text.It is hoped that experiences summarized in the report can be useful in translation of texts relating to Guilin tourism and Chinese integrity and governance culture.
