The "Seventeen Years" ethnic minority films are a special type of film,and are of great importance to the history of ethnic minority films or the history of New Chinese cinema.Most of these outstanding films were adapted from literary works,or regenerated from literary film scripts or folk literature.Based on literary texts,this essay combines interdisciplinary research methods such as publishing,film studies,communication studies and sociology with textual analysis to examine the production,dissemination and dissemination effects of novels and films on ethnic minority themes during the "17 years" as a whole,so as to explore and present the "17 years " In this way,the role played by literary and artistic works on ethnic minority themes in the construction of ethnic identity and ideology is uncovered.The text is divided into three chapters.The first chapter discusses the changes that occurred in the process of adaptation from novel to film.Compared to novels,films focus on strengthening ethnic elements and satisfying the visual desires of the audience.By directly presenting the landscape and ethnic folk culture of the borderlands,the natural landscape is given a specific ideological meaning,costumes are a tool to limit the boundaries of the self and exclude the other,and songs become an important narrative element.In the process of adaptation,the films often present a formulaic narrative formula: the films mostly guide the audience with a love story that conforms to social and ethical values as a subsidiary line,highlighting the redemption and enlightenment of the ethnic minorities by the Han Chinese,who represent the state power.In terms of characterisation,most films retain the characters of the novels with slight additions and deletions to enhance their social status and spirituality,thus enhancing the political and educational significance of the films.The second chapter discusses the role played by ethnic minority works and their film adaptations in the construction of ethnic identity.By transforming the culture of ethnic minorities and linking it to socialist culture,the "Seventeen Years" ethnic films evoke the emotional resonance of people’s hearts through the ethics of kinship,and after the moral identity of the people,they achieve political logical identity,giving them a sense of belonging to the political system to which they belong,thus realising the identity of ethnic minorities.The ethics of the ethnic minorities evoke deep emotional resonance in the hearts of the people.The film also allows the ethnic minorities to participate in social activities and to realise the meaning of their identity in concrete social practices.The film focuses on creating scenes and spaces of ethnic life,and through the awarding of prizes,speeches,ceremonial artefacts and mass celebrations,the ethnic minority people are able to complete their ethnic identity and successfully integrate into the nation and the collective.In addition to the films adapted from novels,there are also many ethnic minority films adapted from dramas,dance dramas,folk legends and folk narrative poems in "17 Years".The film is a normative work that enhances the sense of identity of the ethnic minorities.The third chapter discusses the role played by minority-themed works and their film adaptations in the construction of ideology.In order to further propagate and consolidate socialist ideology,the state actively built up a team of minority writers and put into practice the state’s political orientation in the process of adaptation from novels to films.after the founding of New China in 1949,minority regions were included in the blueprint for socialist construction,and minority people gained economic equality,identity recognition in the cultural sphere and representation in the political sphere,and were able to participate equally in ethnic affairs and nation-building,and learn,understand and accept socialist concepts in social practice.At the same time,the concept of the new Chinese woman was disseminated,and films created a series of images of "new women",and ethnic minority women,through their participation in social activities,established new interpersonal relationships and acquired a new citizenship,transforming from housewives to "new women".The "seventeen years" of ethnic minority women’s participation in society has resulted in a series of "new women" images.The "Seventeen Years" films on ethnic minority themes have a profound significance in the history of China’s development,not only as a paradigm for the creation of films on ethnic minority themes,but also as a means of propagating the Party’s policies,constructing the ethnic image and strengthening national unity.
