| During the long development of sports in China, sports documentaries have recorded the history of sports development in China in the form of films, and have taken on the important task of promoting sports, spreading sports culture and carrying forward the spirit of sports, and have an important position in the social and cultural exchange. With the rise of spatial narrative theory in the fields of literature and sociology, scholars from various countries have not only confined themselves to the analysis of spatial narratives in literature, but have also turned their attention to the spatial narratives in the field of film and television texts. This paper attempts to combine the two, using spatial narrative as an entry point to analyse the existing outstanding sports documentaries in China, adopting Henri Lefebvre’s classification of space in The Production of Space to discuss and analyse the geographical, social and spiritual spaces in Chinese sports documentaries,as well as the spatial narrative techniques used in their practical creation. At the same time,it further summarises the spatial composition of sports documentaries, discusses the social changes that sports documentaries have undergone in the process of development and the changes in sports culture in the context of the new era,and provides references for theoretical research and practical creation of spatial narratives in sports documentaries in China. The first part of the paper defines and delineates the two key concepts of sports documentary and spatial narrative, and on this basis explains the path and current situation of combining the two.The second part focuses on the geospatial narrative of sports documentaries, analysing the unique geographical spaces in sports documentaries and how the creators use these geographical spaces to create spatial narratives. The third part is the social space narrative of sports documentaries, which discusses the "humanised" social space through the portrayal of typical characters under the influence of melodramatic discourses and the presentation of team consciousness in the modernisation of sports, and discusses the social space in sports documentaries in terms of the evolution of human consciousness, human interaction and social relations. The construction of social space in sports documentaries is discussed in terms of the evolution of human consciousness, human interaction and social relations. The fourth part is a narrative of the spiritual space of sports documentaries.Firstly,it summarises the spirit of Chinese sports as conveyed by the images, analyses the spirit of sports and humanism embedded in the creation of sports documentaries, and secondly analyses the new concepts in the modernisation of sports presented in the images. The fifth part analyses the spatial narrative techniques of sports documentaries from the perspective of audiovisual language, discussing the spatial expression function of sports documentaries from the perspective of both picture and sound, and explaining how the creators construct their own unique film narrative space through these visual means. In the context of China’s vigorous development of sports, sports documentaries will also have valuable opportunities for development. The competitive documentary market and the rise of cross-media communication have put forward higher requirements for the creation of sports documentaries, and the enrichment of narrative means and diversification of expressions is the only way to innovate sports documentaries. In the process of creation, the use of spatial narrative can help sports documentaries present their unique humanistic connotation and aesthetic value, and the study of its theory and creation is of great significance to the innovation of sports documentaries. |
