The theoretical system of "epic theater" proposed by Brecht created a new path to break the illusionary art and greatly contributed to the development of contemporary theater. The core of epic theater lies in "narrativity",which replaces the imitation of action with the representation of the situation.Through this way,the drama can produce the effect of defamiliarization, allowing the audience to withdraw from the dramatic illusion, and to appreciate the drama and evaluate the events calmly as the other, thus leading the audience to rational thinking. The research on strangeness theory has been continuously developed at home and abroad, however, most of the existing researches focus on art forms and other aspects, and less attention is paid to some anti-traditional narrative techniques in plays, which leaves more room for this study. Therefore, based on Brecht’s defamiliarization effect theory, the study focuses on the defamiliarization narrative strategy in the original play The Old Tailor, and analyzes it in the context of post-classical narrative theory, focusing on the functions of defamiliarization narrative such as plot advancement, character building, and aesthetic construction, and further revealing their effects on thematic expression. The study discusses how narrative strategies should be used to achieve the defamiliarization effect, and the thesis is divided into four parts: the first part of the introduction, which introduces the basic concept of defamiliarization, the history of the development of defamiliarization narrative research, and the significance of defamiliarization narrative research;the second part focuses on the value of establishing a narrator in The Old Tailor and explores the role of the distance between the audience and the plot in between;the third part focuses on the multiple The third part focuses on the defamiliarization effect of multiple narrative focus, and analyzes the value and significance of the use of internal and external focus in The Old Tailor;the fourth part elaborates on narrative time strategies and their defamiliarization effect, and summarizes the use of narrative time strategies such as repetitive narrative frequency and non-equal narrative time spacing in The Old Tailor.
