The definition of“purposive serial verbs constructions(PSVC)”in Middle Chinese is:the connection of two or more verbs and verb structures, with a common subject, the order between the verbs cannot be reversed, the connection can be inserted, there is no phonetic pause in the middle of the verbs, and there is a semantic relationship between the verbs. In terms of syntax, the main components of PSVC in Middle Chinese are words, with fewer phrases, and words have the trend of being syllabic. In the disyllabic words, there are structural types such as union, partial positive and dynamic object.According to the presence of conjunction,PSVC in Middle Chinese can be divided into unmarked purpose connection type and marked purpose connection type. The connections in PSVC in Middle Chinese are mainly"yi",and almost all are located in the middle of PSVC.The adverbial often appears in front of the conjunction"yi",modifying the whole object type;the subject is mostly the Agents;if the object is flexible,it can be either before or behind the conjunction"yi",which is not particularly close in syntax. In semantic aspect, the preceding item of PSVC in Middle Chinese can include conditions, mode, states and displacement;the latter item has behavioral intention and action anticipation. On the whole, the forward and forward items of medieval Chinese are successive and short-term in time. Many of the subjects in the medieval Chinese category are deeds, almost not affected.Abebeals can modify the whole target class,V1or V2respectively.A pronoun refers to someone or a group in a purpose category, and can also refer to something.According to the quantitative statistics of PSVC in Middle Chinese,it is found that V1of PSVC in Middle Chinese is mainly behavioral verb, and V2is mainly personnel verb, which is in line with the semantic characteristics of PSVC.Among them, verbs can be divided into eight subcategories according to semantic grammar characteristics, including behavioral verbs, human verbs, displacement verbs, tendency verbs, etc.,while PSVC is mainly composed of behavioral verbs and human verbs, and perception verbs and state verbs are very rare in PSVC.These verbs are flexible in PSVC,which can be reversed and repeated.A comparative analysis of PSVC in Middle Chinese and PSVC in Modern Chinese shows that in terms of syntactic characteristics, the types of PSVC in Modern Chinese are more than those of PSVC in Middle Chinese, which are both the same and different;in terms of semantic characteristics, most of them coincide.
