| The surge of American female political leadership in the 21st century can be attributed to the persistent efforts of female leaders and the positive influence of societal changes.Despite the relentless endeavors of female pioneers, the concept of female leadership emerged belatedly in American culture, and the marginalization of non-masculine leadership traits has conventionally limited the representation of women in leadership roles.Such stereotypes have significantly hindered the development of female political leadership, particularly among female candidates,as they may impact voters’perceptions. Moreover, the media’s portrayal of US female political leaders has often been negative, further worsening the situation.Nonetheless, the emergence and popularity of social media have opened up new possibilities for female political leaders to overcome these obstacles.Through the integration of theories from the fields of performance studies and mass communication, and the examination of various case studies, this thesis contends that American female political leadership has experienced unprecedented development in the 21st century, with social media playing a crucial role in this transformation. The thesis first examines how gender-based prejudice and stereotyping, which have been prevalent within American traditional media, have contributed to the limited and inaccurate portrayal of women in politics.Women who lack masculine leadership traits have often been disregarded as potential leaders and biased media coverage has further reduced the electoral prospects of female politicians.Such gender biases and stereotyping have constituted significant impediments to the progress of women in politics. However, the emergence and widespread adoption of social media in the 21st century have brought about a fundamental transformation in the landscape of political communication in the US.By facilitating fast and targeted communication, social media platforms have revolutionized the way politicians interact with their followers, bypassing traditional media’s often prejudiced coverage and unfavorable depiction of female politicians. As a result, social media empowers female political leadership by enabling them to generate personalized content and clap back, counter gender stereotypes and biased media coverage, and deepen the relationship with their followers, thus opening up new avenues for female political leadership in the new century. |
