A Report On English-Chinese Translation Of Textualization Of Oral Epics(Chapter Four)

This is a report on the E-C translation practice of Textualization of Oral Epics(Chapter Four).This book is a collection of academic essays edited by Finnish folklorist Lauri Honko.The fourth chapter selected for this practice focus on the process of collecting,organizing,and translating African epics by scholars.The book was published in 2000.The selected text has 19,156 English words and there is no Chinese translation so far.The translation practice mainly adopted Peter Newmark’s theory of communicative translation and semantic translation.At the lexical level,translator mainly adopted the methods of annotation and lexical conversion.At the Syntactic Level,translator mainly adopted the methods of amplification,omission and adjusting the order of words.At the textual level,translator mainly adopted the method of enhancing the connection between paragraphs.In addition,the translator dealt with the images through the retention and deletion.It is hoped that this translation will be helpful to the study of epic poetry in China.In addition,translator also hopes that the translation experience and methods summarized in the translation process can improve his own translation ability and provide case references for future translation of academic monographs in humanities and social sciences.
