Abstract/Summary:
The Chinese culture has a long history with Zhongyuan culture as its important part To promote and spread the excellent traditional Chinese culture and strengthen the cultural communication between countries,it is necessary to translate Chinese culture into English.The translator chooses Chapter Nine of An Introduction to Zhongyuan Culture as the source text in this translation report.This book presents the origin of Zhongyuan culture,including historical figures’life stories,literary allusion,cultural and artistic achievements,and important historical events.These achievements embody the distinctive characteristics of Zhongyuan culture.Under the guidance of adaptation theory,different translation methods are used to deal with the difficulties of words and sentences.As to the translation of words,culture-loaded words are dealt with mainly by transliteration,transliteration plus annotation and free translation;and literal translation and omission are adopted to deal with the translation of four-character phrases;for the translation of technical terms,the translator mainly adopts literal translation plus annotation and transliteration.At the level of the sentence translation,paratactic sentences of Chinese are dealt with translation methods of addition and omission to combine short sentences,and sentences with serial verbs are readjusted in structures to make the translation suitable for the target readers’ writing habits.This translation report can provide useful materials for foreign readers to understand Chinese culture,especially Zhongyuan culture.By doing this translation,the translator hopes to make contributions to the inheritance and spread of Zhongyuan culture.
