Akutagawa Ryunosuke(Mar 1,1892-July 24,1927),courtesy name “Master of The River”and haiku name“Ghost”,was a well-known novelist in modern Japan.Although his literary career was short,Akutagawa Ryunosuke left behind many literary works covering a wide range of genres such as short stories, literary criticism, and travelogues.Among them, there are many literary works with Chinese themes. For example, the same is true of the short stories “Christ of Nanjing”,“The Fan of Hunan”,“Du Zichun”,including “Travels in China” written after visiting China. These literary works have the theme of “China or Chinese”.Due to Akutagawa’s literary historical position in modern Japanese literature, many studies have been conducted on Akutagawa literature to date. However, the study of Akutagawa’s Novels with Chinese motifs,“Christ of Nanjing”,“Fan of Hunan”,and “Du Zichun”,or the collection of essays on the image of Chinese and the image of Chinese cities through “Travels in China”,rarely appears.Based on these previous studies, this paper aims to explore the changes in the “Chinese image” in Akutagawa’s literary works based on these previous studies, using Akutagawa’s visit to China as a time node. This article analyzes the Chinese image and Chinese image described by the writer in the text, taking the works created by Akutagawa Ryunosuke around the image of China and the image of Chinese as the research object, and draws the following conclusions:First of all, before visiting China in the 1920s and seeing the real situation in China,Akutagawa Ryunosuk was fascinated by China’s classical literature and was full of longing for China, seeing China as a romantic country with such good men and arrogance as in "Water Margin" and "Romance of the Three Kingdoms".This kind of good feeling for China gradually gave birth to his unique "Chinese taste" in the 1920s.Secondly,Akutagawa’s understanding of China has undergone a process from yearning to regret to disappointment, and this process is also the process of Wasagawa from escaping from reality to beginning to care for reality.Waking up from his fantasies,Akutagawa no longer blindly immersed in the classical and fantasy world,he began to look at the real world, caring, discovering, and thinking about the problems of the real world. In the political order of East Asia, which was once the "Huayi order",China has always been the center of East Asia,"King’s Landing",but in the 1920s,this former glory has disappeared.Akutagawa Ryunosuke, who came to visit China during this period, witnessed the current situation of China being reduced to a colony by the ruthless aggression of the Western powers, and shattered his illusions about China. The streets were full of ragged beggars, doing coolies like slaves. At the end of the streets, there are addicts who smoke opium with blank eyes in opium houses.
