| This report selects translation material from China’s Ethos of Poverty Alleviation written by Wu Li and Wang Aiyun,which systematically introduces and summarizes China’s journey out of poverty and has no available translation in the world now.The translator renders Research Report on Poverty Alleviation in Yuxian County of Hebei Province from the second part of this book.And in the process of translation,the translator finds that difficulties mainly lie in vocabulary with Chinese characteristics,including words with parallel structure,numerical abbreviations,metaphorical expressions and abstract words.According to the theory of the British linguist and translation theorist J.C.Catford,the text material shall be shifted at least one level to reach text equivalence as it can hardly be translated entirely into the target text.In light of the theory of Translation shifts,the translator converts the class and unit of the phrases with parallel structure,and takes the methods of literal translation and amplification to translate numerical abbreviations via level shifts.As for metaphorical expressions,the translator substitutes and paraphrases them in line with the shifts of intra-system and unit.And lastly,the abstract words are omitted in translation in pursuit of conciseness and partial equivalence of text.The translation of this book aims at spreading China’s experience and wisdom in fighting poverty to the international community and making a contribution to the cause of human poverty reduction.At the same time,this translation practice offers a new perspective for the study of vocabulary with Chinese characteristics and provides a reference for the future translation of such vocabulary,so as to better narrate Chinese stories and culture. |
